In addition, differences that happen are often faint and can lead to uncomfortable situations.  “Culture is a way of life of a group of people, beliefs, values and symbols that are accepted generally without thinking about them and they are held and passed on down by initiation and communication from one generation to the next” (Chaney & Martin, 2011, p. 205).   Taking ill of another’s cultural is valid, but if you research another culture then you can equip yourself with the knowledge to not take ill when dealing with individuals who differ from the group you are accustom to.  That would include business communication, group, communities, and personally. Caucasian and African American’s

There will always be issues between Caucasian and African American’s,  I believe that this (not all) of European group will never look at African American’s as equal.  But they readily accept other groups, accept for Hispanics but they seem more accepting of that group.  Thursday evening my son and his wife had a little dinner party at a restaurant for her birthday.  The wait was kind of long so I went outside to get some air. The restaurant had a wine tasting affair the was ending.  Two white American’s males came out and one was a little intoxicated.  He looked at me and said “I hate that (the n word) Obama!”  I was to out done.  I could not let that go.  I said what did you say?  His friend said “he didn’t mean that and he’s a little drunk.”  I said well you know what they say that a drunk tongue speaks a sober thought!  I told him that he is a human being and did you know his mother is white? I am very faired skin he may have thought I was white?  I told him that my mother was white so what does that make me?  His friend was trying hard to make him shut up and then he said that he was born in South Africa…like that was changing something.  I said, “You are still human and deserve to be respected as the President should be…and go with God!  I normally would not have said anything but I could not help myself.  He was looking for a response and he got one.  We have a long way to go in America with race relations and the playing field is changing as we are becoming more diverse and other culture’s are in our country.  WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THIS?

How to Write a Reflection

How to Write a Reflection

Writing a reflection is multifaceted.  The writer needs to do so much before writing, and in the moment of the writing (and editing), the author must stay on track to his/her focus while giving plenty of detail for the reader to FEEL the message.  It’s as much about thinking and thinking about thinking as it is to feeling.

Reflection is a combination of cognition, emotion, and body sensations.  Here is an approach to help you reflect well.  Not only will you learn the information, but the process of reflection actually boosts the brain’s ability to make decisions.


1.  Using a quiet mind and a quiet environment, be quiet and listen to your houghts.  Reflection is quiet.

2.  Step One is Critical Thinking: Ask questions like…

  • What did I learn that I expected?  What did I learn that I didn’t expect?
  • How am I changed?
  • What will I do with this information?
  • How will I influence others with this information?

3. Step Two:  Examine your own thinking.  How was I thinking that?  What was I thinking?  Why?  What were my biases, assumptions, etc?

4.  Step Four (We skip gathering information.): After confidence to your learning based on the content covered, decide a writing core – a focus.

5. Write in first person.  Write with depth – no surface only comments.  Write with specificity.  What exactly did you learn and what will you do with that new you?

Activity: Reflection Writing

The purpose of this assignment is for you to report on your learning to your instructor.

Task:  You are to write a 200 word memo to your instructor in memo format.
Task Definitive: Detail on an aspect(s) of the unit that personally affected you.  It is a reflection.  The question you are answering is ‘How does thinking show up in expression? What has changed your thinking and how will you use it in your career and in your life?”     

Reflection Writings:

Your reflective writings are to be a  beautifully-written fully-thought-out organized message to your audience.  You are to use memo format.

At it’s very minimum, it is to be three paragraphs – an introduction, a body, and a conclusion.  Be sure you use business writing style!

Too often people start writing without knowing where they are going. As a first step, you need to slow down and plan before you write. You should think about the results you want to achieve, the needs of the audience and the best organization for your message. The more time you spend preparing, the more time you save in the editing and proofreading stage. For the purposes of this assignment, you need to use the Communication Strategy Worksheet (attached below) for your planning. After reading the case, complete the Communications Strategy Worksheet. (Please note, you do NOT write the memo, only the Worksheet!)

Activity:
In this case, you are Jack Stack, a regional sales manager for a national logistics company. You have 12 salespeople throughout your region reporting to him. Previously, the salespeople worked from various offices that housed other administrative functions and they receive secretarial and administrative support from these offices. To reduce costs, however, the company closed the local offices and consolidated the administrative functions at the corporate offices in Kansas City. Salespeople now work out of home-based offices. Consequently, they are responsible for producing their own correspondence without help from an administrative secretary.

As copies of internal memos and letters written by your salespeople cross your desk, you are shocked at the awkward wording and lack of clarity, not to mention the numerous grammar and punctuation errors. Email is even worse. You are concerned about the impact on your company’s image.
Last week, during a meeting of the local chapter of Sales and Marketing Executives, you heard a presentation by a communication consultant, Pamela Skidmore, who specializes in coaching salespeople on writing skills. She made a strong case on how organizations pay a price in wasted time, wasted effort and lost goodwill when writing isn’t as good as it could be. Her company, Write Stuff, offers classes and individual coaching.

You arranged a meeting with Pamela and gave her some writing samples from your salespeople. You were impressed with her critique of the writing and her thoughts on how to improve it. Her process calls for a 2-day workshop followed by individual coaching by phone and e-mail. Ms. Skidmore left you some brochures that explain the features and benefits of her services. You checked her references and her clients gave her rave reviews.
The fees for a workshop are substantial. For 12 salespeople, the program would cost $4,000 with a 90-day retainer of $2,000 for follow-up coaching. The cost includes a pre- and post-training evaluation. In addition, the cost of travel, hotel stays, meals and meeting rooms for the 2-day event could easily add up to another $6,000. Finally, the company would need to bear the cost of time away from the job for the salespeople.
This type of expense is not in your budget, but you think you can make a case for the workshop to your boss based on the benefits of the training. You also assume that other Regional VPs in the country are having a similar problem. Perhaps your region can serve as a pilot for the company for this type of training.
