Cultural Experience Report #1 paper

Cultural Experience Report #1 paper

Your assignment is to report on TWO “cultural experience” visits you make during this term. You will hand in one during week 4 and the other during week 7. After each visit, write a 500-800 word report about the visit and what you learned.

Your instructor may modify this assignment.

Instructions

For your two reports, attend two different venues from this list.

art museum or sculpture garden

significant or notable architectural site (if there is explanatory material there to help you understand it)

music concert

theater play

poetry reading or spoken word performance

dance performance

Film festival or presentation of a film by an academic author or cinema expert

religious service, ceremony or ritual for a religion very different from yours, if you practice (for instance, if you are Christian, you may not go to another Christian denomination’s service)

other displays or performances may be acceptable. Check with your instructor for approval beforehand.

Restrictions: The experience should be done in person. If this is impossible, contact the instructor to arrange for alternatives. You may not report on a cultural experience from prior to this class.

Write a report after each cultural experience (Cultural Experience Report #1 and #2).

Each report should include the following information. Include photos or links that help convey the information. As always, be sure to document all sources you consult in preparing your work.

Name and location of the museum, site, or performance event. If there is on-line information about the site or performance, be sure to include a link to it within the text of your essay in an appropriate place.

Type of museum, site or event. For example, is it a portrait museum, a poetry slam, an outdoor Shakespeare festival performance? If you attended a performance, name the performer or the piece. Be specific about what you attended, when, and where.

Briefly describe the general setting by talking a bit about the location, the number of people there, the general overall “vibe” of the place.

Describe at least one aspect of the experience that you found especially interesting. For example, you might write about a particular work of art, cultural artifact, song, dance section, scene in a play, costumes or lighting, a particular character in a film or play, a particular actor or vocalist, etc. Explain what impressed or affected you, and why. Your reaction can be positive or negative, as long as you offer an explanation.

Identify and use at at least two tools that you have learned about in this class to talk about your visit. For example, if you visit a museum, you might point out how color works in one of the paintings, or if you go to a concert, how rhythm works in one of the songs. Make sure you are explicit in identifying the tools you are using and the learning resources your tools come from. Make sure to inform the reader about the tool through a quote or paraphrase from the learning resource. Then, make sure to tell the reader how you interpret some elements of your visit with the tools.

Be sure to cite the learning resources you have used in MLA format. Please see http://sites.umuc.edu/library/libhow/mla_examples.cfm

Reflect on the relevance–if any–of your experience to your everyday life. How did the experience engage your feelings or emotions, if at all? What does this tell you about human culture, or about yourself?

STOP: Before you hand in your assignment, ask yourself the following questions:

Have I provided the name and location of the museum, site, or performance event and URL, if available, identified the type of museum, site or event, and provided a general description of the setting?

Have I identified and explained an especially interesting aspect of the experience and used examples to illustrate reflections and to explain why this aspect was interesting?

Have I identified and applied two tools of interpretation from learning resources to two different examples from visit?

Have I used examples to clearly explain the relevance of my visit to at least one of the following: 1) emotion 2) human culture 3) self-identity 4) cultural identity?

Have I provided a list of resources and do all of my citations conform to MLA 8th edition guidelines?

Have I proofread this assignment for grammatical, structural, and spelling errors?

People with disabilities should always be portrayed as contributing members to the community.

People with disabilities should always be portrayed as contributing members to the community.

Eric Solomon

ENC0211

03/10/2019

Proposal

  1. I select the reading, Disability and the Media: Prescriptions for Change. This reading b written by Charles A. Riley II touched upon many different aspects of how people with disabilities are treated and portrayed in our community. This reading really stood out to me for some personal reasons. My mother unfortunately suffers from a brain disorder and can no longer speak. She is also on the board for her Assisted Living Facility to make a difference in her community. With that being said, I couldn’t have chosen a better reading to write about.
  2. I chose my topic mainly around people with disabilities and the community. This reading and topic itself really hit home for me and is something I truly enjoy researching and conversing about.
  3. Throughout my paper, I’m going to be touching upon my thesis of; People with disabilities should always be portrayed as contributing members to the community. I chose carefully when thinking of this thesis and main point to write about. In his writing, Riley makes a list of “tips” when reporting to people with disabilities. While they are valid statements and tips, I feel that some of them are a little rough around the edges and are somewhat controversial.
  4. The argument I will be presenting Is going to a challenge on common belief. Again, in Riley’s “tips” he states, “people with disabilities should be portrayed as contributing members to the community.” I completely agree with this argument, but I also feel that it is a given to most people. So, I’m going to be elaborating on that statement and going to make a firmer argument supporting Riley and his “tip”.
  5. I honestly can say that I saw this reading and it jumped off the page at me. Again, I am very passionate about the way people with disabilities are portrayed. I deal with misconception on that level daily and I couldn’t have chosen a more suitable reading for myself. I am more than positive I will not have to change my topic. I am more than prepared to continue research about my topic.
  6. A lot of my research was in person. I was able to attend a board meeting with my mother at her living facility. When I was there, I learned a lot about each and every person that was in that meeting and they are all spectacular people with amazing capabilities. I interviewed a few people who stood out to me and again learned so much about them and the problems they face every day. I’m going to continue my research online to find the rest of my information.
  7. I mainly researched other controversies around the world that include discrimination against people with disabilities. That’s the basis of my paper and it’s very easy to find information on between the various types of discrimination that’s out there. I found a lot of court cases that pertain to this topic and its unbelievable how many cases that exist. My research was very specific. It did not vary due to my argument. I am trying to stay on the track of discrimination and the portrayal of people with disabilities.
  8. I didn’t necessarily have to download any of the information that I gathered online. The websites that I used were all very resourceful without any downloads. I was able to access court cases, articles, and programs across the United States that fight for the same topic I am arguing about. It’s a very big controversy around the world that millions of people of fighting for.
  9. The main database that I used for my articles was Jstor.org. I really like this site. Not only does it supply a countless number of articles and court cases, I really never have to narrow my search or dig any harder than I am to find the information that I need. I have always been told to use Jstor throughout my time at PBSC and its never failed!
  10. I combined a few words in order to find the proper information. I used the words like: discrimination, disability and, portrayal. These few words really helped me find all the information that I needed to prepare this paper.
  11. With the thorough research that I did, I can honestly say I read over 10 articles about my topic. I did not have to use all them. Again, this topic really hits home and I enjoy reading up on it and educating myself more and more.
  12. Credible research has to come from a very reliable source. For example, Wikipedia is not a reliable source at all. Anyone can post something about a topic, and you could be reading totally false information. An example of a reliable source would be Web.md. All of that information is coming from doctors and medical research which both very reliable sources. My research is also very current (within the last ten years) and incredibly accurate.
  13. I am more than positive that all of my information is credible. I did have to throw away a few articles that did not pertain to my topic. I did continue to read them although they didn’t pertain to my topic. The information that’s provided in most of the articles that I read are very interesting.
  14. Most of the research that I found all agrees with my argument. However, I did find a few articles that disagreed with my topic. I am more than prepared to cover both agreements and disagreements about my topic.
  15. I think people should care about this topic because it is a very serious and relevant problem in today’s society. We deal with people almost every day that might have some sort of disability. Some are obvious and others, not so much. It is of vital importunacy that we treat everyone the same way and portray nobody differently.
  16. The audience of my argument is directed to anyone who knows or has someone in their family that has some sort of disability. This is a very strong argument that reaches out even further than people with a disabled relative or friend. It reaches out to anyone who has ever encountered someone with disabilities or does on a daily basis. This topic can relate to majority of people. In my opinion.
  17. Yes. I am trying to make the argument in behalf of people with disabilities that they should never be portrayed differently and is absurd that it is even a current problem in society today.
  18. I think my argument is best presented in classical structural style. It’s a straight forward argument that can be easily addressed by getting the audience’s attention, address the problem and tell them what they can do to help or contribute to the cause.
  19. My argument will be structured as so; I will start by addressing the issue and how big of a problem it is in today’s society. I will then trying to connect with anyone in the audience who can relate to my problem or the topic itself. This will help gain attention. I will continue by incorporating the court cases and articles with all of the statistics and information. Finally, I will close the argument again restating the thesis and telling the audience what they can do to contribute
  20. My ethos will be addressed in the fact that it is morally wrong to discriminate someone based upon a disability that they unfortunately suffer with. My pathos will be introduced with my mother. I have a very strong connection to this topic and it was not hard for me to personally connect to it. My logos will be in the form of the court cases in documents that proves the topic and argument I am getting across to the audience.

Developing An Annotated Bibliography

Developing An Annotated Bibliography

I need an annotated bibliography created that is accurate to my research from my textbook. I attached the outline for how it should be done and my previous proposal for the research paper that is in the works

Paper 3: Creating an Annotated Bibliography

As you embark on the process of writing a research paper where you will be finding and evaluating your own sources, you will need to consider what exactly makes a source you find relevant and credible and what makes the source trustworthy or weak. Completing an annotated bibliography helps you answer these questions for yourself as well as for your instructor. An annotated bibliography asks you to begin thinking about your sources in ways that will help you in the long run, such as by avoiding sources that may cause your reader to lose trust in you if you choose to use a source with poor evidence, method, or authority. After all, having strong sources does not just help you establish logos but also ethos. And do not forget that you have help available to you at the FAU Library.

Before you begin, check out Cornell University’s link about Annotated Bibliographies. Yours is a bit different, but the page should help flesh out why annotated bibliographies are important in academic writing.

Now, to help you stay focused on making sure you cover each point, all six steps of the annotated bibliography have been color coded. Please replicate this color coding in your own Annotated Bibliography.

Be sure to cover all six of these points in only ONE page (please do not exceed one page per source) per source (so there should be seven pages in total since you have seven sources [six from your own research and one from your textbook]): An MLA citation for the journal article, book chapter, etc., a summary of the article, an evaluation of the authority/background of the author(s), a commentary and explanation of the author’s intended audience, a comparison and/or contrast of this work with another source included in the annotated bibliography (save this step maybe until you are done with the other steps and have entered all sources), and a final explanation of how this work will contribute to your essay (this question should also already have been answered in your proposal to some degree). This assignment is due Sunday, March 24 via the Assignments link on Bb by 11:59 P.M.

Below, please find an example:

Waite, Linda J., Frances Kobrin Goldscheider, and Christina Witsberger. “Nonfamily Living and the Erosion of Traditional Family Orientations among Young Adults.” American Sociological Review vol. 51, no. 4, 2008, pp. 541-554.

The authors have advanced degrees in their fields: Waite has a PhD in Sociology and is the current director of the Center of Aging at N.O.R.C, Goldscheider has a PhD in Demography and is Professor Emerita at both Brown University and the University of Maryland, and Witsberger has an MpH in Biostatistics and is a Senior Research Analyst at Kennel and Associates; their backgrounds and degrees suggest that they are especially suited for writing an article about this topic as they are most likely authorities on their chosen topic. This article is meant for an academic audience, not necessarily undergraduates as the article is very field specific and uses very difficult jargon, but for graduate students and academics researching in their field; graduate students or professionals in the field would understand the terms and language that the writers use with little difficulty, but the average reader would most likely need to research some of the terms the authors use. They use data from the National Longitudinal Surveys of Young Women and Young Men to test their hypothesis that nonfamily living by young adults alters their attitudes, values, plans, and expectations, thus moving them away from their beliefs in traditional sex roles. They find their hypothesis strongly supported in young females, while the effects were fewer in studies of young males. Their study found that increasing the time away from parents before getting married helped improve individualism, self-sufficiency, and changes in attitudes about families within young adults. The article by Smith, Joyce, and Reed touched on this topic in a minor way; it said that young adults who only live at home only understand the roles they see their parents have in the house and may not understand that these roles are flexible. On the other hand, the speech by Kim claims that college students who live with roommates have a better understanding of gender role flexibility as they are more likely to share “gendered” roles in their home. Finally, this article will help me support the main argument of my essay since it shows that our understanding of gender can change even as far as young adulthood. It argues that we become aware of gender roles and how not all families have the same roles in the home or may have gender flexibility in roles, which my essay also argues. Without this article, it would be difficult for me to prove my main point.

Businesses have different goals and objectives in which meet their business needs and requirements. A cloud strategy is a definition of the motives and the goals for adopting a cloud strategy. The cloud strategy will serve the needs of the management of an organization from different management levels. Each department contributes to the success of the organization. The objectives of each department form the overall motives of the organization. There is the need for an effective cloud system for each enterprise, this is because of the automation that is provided by the system which maximizes the inputs in the business to ensure effective running of the enterprise (Briggs & Kassner, 2016). All the services provided by a cloud strategy will enable a manageable relationship between the heads of departments in the organization.

The initiation phase and the migration phase will require the assistance of the IT department. The training of the employees on how to use the new system will be conducted by the Human Resource Manager (Briggs & Kassner, 2016). The IT department will form part of the trainers who will bring to speed the rest of the employees on the usage of the adopted cloud strategy. The IT department head has the application requirement for each of the department. He or she will be significant in the selection of the application. This is because the cloud system has to work properly with the applications used in each department to ensure that the management gets a hold of every aspect of the organization.

The senior management is responsible for the operations of the organization. The cloud adoption will directly affect management. The selection of the best cloud strategy in the adoption process is the mandate of the senior management which includes the board. There is the appropriation of the adoption process and the financial requirements that come with the cloud strategy (Briggs & Kassner, 2016). The HR department while liaising with the Administration and Senior management can come up with programs that will enable the migration phase to be effective together with the training of employees.

The Planning phase is dependent on all departments but mostly the senior management. The insight in the type of the cloud infrastructure and the capacity of the organization will require the senior management and the IT head. The human resource depart will be responsible for carrying out the initiation, training and implementation of the cloud system accepted upon. The migration process will also require the active involvement of the finance department in order to trace the impact of the adoption strategy on the financial running of the organization. The adoption costs have to be keenly considered to ensure an effective procedure is used.

The needs of any business must be met by the cloud strategy adopted. This is because the senior management will have an easy time managing the departments in the organization. The department is also able to work effectively when the cloud system adopted meets the requirements of the applications used in each department. The phases of adoption will require the input of all the departments in the organization.

Historical background of the country from the colonial period to the present.

Your conclusion

Please make sure that your sources are cited correctly by using the APA style. Use parenthetical references whenever you paraphrase an author, make a citation, or take somebody’s opinion. A bibliography of at least 5 sources should be added at the end of the paper. Do not rely on just one or a couple of sources. Doing this is a sign of laziness. The paper should not be descriptive. It must be analytical. Note that a paper without references, including bibliography, amounts to plagiarism and an “F” grade will be given to such a paper. Please see the SSU web page for instructions regarding the APA style. See also the attached handout.
