Vulnerable Population Summary and Proposed Program

Vulnerable Population Summary and Proposed Program
The first of your two written assignments for the course will provide a beginning framework that you will utilize in the development of your
Final Project: a proposal for a community-based program in your area. For this first written assignment, you will select one of the vulnerable groups identified in the text that will serve as your target population of interest throughout the duration of your next written assignment and Final Project.
Select one among the following groups from Chapter 1:

  • Vulnerable mothers and children
  • Abused individuals
  • Chronically ill and disabled people
  • People diagnosed with HIV/AIDS
  • People diagnosed with mental conditions
  • Suicide- and homicide-liable people
  • People affected by alcohol and substance abuse
  • Indigent and homeless people
  • Immigrants and refugees
  • Groups for special consideration (you may propose a different vulnerable population at the consent of the instructor)

Once you have selected a group of interest, write a three page paper that covers the following:

  • Discuss the impact that at least two of the factors below have on the vulnerability of your chosen group:
    • Age
    • Gender
    • Culture/Ethnicity
    • Income
  • Analyze the intersection of social, political, and economic factors affecting vulnerability (must address all three factors).
  • Draft the design of a new model program, not currently existent within your community. Provide a two- to- three paragraph statement that introduces your proposed community program. This section is tentative and might change as you conduct more research. At a minimum, however, items to address should include:
  • An explanation of the issues and risk factors experienced by the selected population.
  • An evaluation of the health needs of the group and a proposed continuum of care level (preventive, treatment, or long-term care) based on the group’s issues, risk factors, and needs.  Justify the proposed level with supportive research/evidence.
  • A description of one to two proposed services your program will include.

Your assignment should be a minimum of three pages in length (excluding title and reference pages), and should include a minimum of three scholarly sources cited according to APA guidelines as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.

Carefully review the Grading Rubric for the criteria that will be used to evaluate your assignment.

Assessment of Community-Level Barriers

Assessment of Community-Level Barriers

For the second written assignment of the course, you will continue in the design of your proposed model program by demonstrating your understanding of your selected population’s challenges, which negatively impact this group’s health and well-being. Based on this week’s research, conduct an assessment of the barriers, limitations, and other distinguishing features, as they exist within your community.

  • Prepare a recap of the model program for your community that you originally shared in the week 2 written assignment.  As stated in the Week Two directions, changes to the potential program can be made as you research and develop the focus of the program.
  • Analyze and discuss at least three critical barriers that impact the health and well-being of your chosen group; one must be a micro-level (individual) barrier that is financial, one must be a macro-level (community/state) barrier that relates to access and funding for care, and  the third barrier may be one of your choosing.
  • Discuss at least one proposed solution for each barrier. Your solution for the micro barrier must include an analysis of various potential funding options (both independent and integrated). Your solution for the macro barrier must include an analysis of financing resources for health care.
  • Research and analyze the regulatory, legal, ethical, and accreditation requirements and issues for the service(s) offered in your proposed program.  Discuss how each will impact the management of the program.

Your assignment should be a minimum of three pages in length (excluding title and reference pages) and should include a minimum of three scholarly sources cited according to APA guidelines as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center. Please note: All assignments in this course are progressive; therefore you should use the same population selected in your Week Two assignment. The Week Two assignment’s contents do not need to be re-submitted with this assignment.

Carefully review the Grading Rubric for the criteria that will be used to evaluate your assignment.

Portier spends a lot of time in the first half of this article talking about human experience.

Recall that Prothero noted at the end of his article that life’s deep questions often lead people to look at various religious traditions for answers. This article expands on that insight and provides us with some further tools for studying religious traditions. Before you read the article, please look up the author like you did with the first assignment. His full name is Dr. William Portier… you will find that he knows a little bit about the University of Dayton!

As you read, consider the following questions and provide your responses as an attached file or in the text box below:

1. Portier spends a lot of time in the first half of this article talking about human experience. Please write a short paragraph (4-6 sentences) explaining what you think he is trying to tell us about human experience and its potential connection to religious traditions.

2. Recall that we talked briefly in class Thursday about the difficulties with talking about “religion” in the abstract. Portier’s discussion of the concept of “tradition” in this article will help us get around those problems. In your own words, please explain what you think Portier means by the term “tradition” here.

3. Towards the end of the chapter, Portier says that tradition is “both limiting and enabling/freeing.” Pick a tradition that you are a member of and explain how it both limits you and enables/frees you. (If you aren’t sure what to choose, notice that you are all members of the tradition of being students at the University of Dayton… there are certain things about this that limit you and that free you!)

4. Think back to our discussion of Prothero and his vision of studying religious traditions (multiple mountain metaphor). Tell me one way that Prothero and Portier are similar in how they seem to understand religions, and one way that they are different. (Don’t worry if you aren’t sure about this one… I will not grade this question too harshly)

What is the value of using quantitative and qualitative data in community health assessment?

What is the value of using quantitative and qualitative data in community health assessment? Consider the instances in which quantitative or qualitative data might be more appropriate to use in a community health assessment. Quantitative and qualitative data are not mutually exclusive but instead have different functions. Both types provide valuable information, but they are not always equally appropriate in every assessment or aspect of assessment.

For this Discussion, review this week’s Resources. As a public health professional, consider the appropriateness of quantitative and qualitative data in community health assessments. Think about the benefits and limitations of quantitative and qualitative data in community health assessment.

With these thoughts in mind:

Post – three pages of an explanation of one benefit and one limitation of quantitative data and one benefit and one limitation of qualitative data when conducting a community health assessment. Provide two examples for when qualitative data may be more appropriate in community health assessment, and two examples for when quantitative data may be more appropriate in community health assessment. Justify your response with references to the Resources and current literature.

Indian Consumer Article Summary and Discussion Questions

Indian Consumer Article Summary and Discussion Questions

The Indian Consumer: Apparel Clothing Involvement

In the article, “How Cosmopolitan are Indian Consumers?: A Study on Fashion Clothing Involvement,” published in 2013 author Arpita Khare explores the possible opportunities that await clothing manufacturers and retailers targeting the Indian consumer. Khare has chosen to focus this study on a country rich with culture and tradition. As one of the notable BRICS nations, India boosts a large population, a thriving economy and spends a substantial amount of money on luxury fashion apparel. And yet, there is still much to be discovered about the Indian consumer’s involvement in fashion. This study attempts to shed a light on this particular consumer in part by addressing the effect that cosmopolitanism has on their choices for apparel.

At first read this article presents the Indian consumer much like any other fashion consumer from many given countries, even western countries. For example, Khare notes in regard to the Indian consumer “…new money is purchasing luxury clothing as a symbol of wealth and status.” So what makes the Indian consumer so different from other consumers in other countries? One difference is the dichotomy of this consumer’s fashion choices. According to this study Indian consumers carefully balance their taste for luxury fashion with the need to be accepted within their social environment. Although this may be said for other countries and cultures, India is unique in this regard.

The Indian consumer is cosmopolitan. This consumer is open to the influence of other cultures as it desires to be regarded as a sophisticated country by the global community. However, this study shows the importance Indians place on tradition and culture, and this is what makes the Indian consumer so interesting. A good example of this is the popular Bollywood emergence influenced by the famous Hollywood in Los Angeles. This is an illustration of how cultural influence works in India. India accepts the influence but merges it with Indian’s own unique culture. Much like Hollywood’s influence on India’s entertainment industry, the study shows that the Indian consumer has a distinct openness toward global fashion brands, but wants to make them their own.

However, age may be a factor. Not surprisingly, Khare’s literature review shows that younger Indian consumers are more cosmopolitan than older Indian consumers. Unfortunately the ages of the participants in this study are relatively young, 18-40, so the findings in the study cannot confirm the findings in the review. It is interesting to note that many refused to participate in the study so, one has to wonder if it was the older population that declined. Does this say something about the Indian culture?

In conclusion, understanding the Indian culture is the key to success for apparel companies longing to tap into this potentially lucrative market. Presenting this consumer with luxury fashion clothing styles while honoring the Indian collectivism tradition will most likely bring the most success. Of course, this is easier said than done, but considering the global sensation of Bollywood; if that unique balance is found, the fashion consumption of the Indian consumer may surprise everyone.

Discussion Question Choices:

Discuss how India’s collective culture influences the Indian consumer’s fashion clothing involvement.

Using both the current article findings and previous literature, what changes have occurred globally to cause the Indian consumers to be more cosmopolitan?

Considering the success of international food chains in India, what are the factors or strategies required to make international apparel brands a success? Please use specific reasons and elaborate them accordingly.

India is considered to be the global leader of IT, yet they do not accept modified clothing. Discuss using references to support your opinion.

Can anyone else provide examples of how global fashion is currently influencing India and how Indian fashion is influencing global fashion trends?

According to McCarthy, which of the following came first? Communities of worshipping followers of Jesus OR the New Testament portion of the Bible?

Look up David Matzko McCarthy before reading the document so that you have a sense of who the author is! Be prepared to say something about who he is in class on Tuesday.

You only need to read through to the top of page 49.

Questions:

1. According to McCarthy, which of the following came first? Communities of worshipping followers of Jesus OR the New Testament portion of the Bible? Support your answer with some sort of justification from the first couple pages of the article.

2. As our other authors have done, McCarthy discusses the positions of those who he disagrees with. One of these positions is the claim that the Bible is free from human involvement. In your own words, summarize this position (in other words, what do those who think the Bible is free from human involvement believe, according to McCarthy).

3. Now that you have outlined the position McCarthy disagrees with, explain why McCarthy thinks it’s important to see that the “imprint of human life” is clearly present in the Christian scriptures. (In other words, why does he think the position in #2 is not correct)

4. Finally, read the section entitled “Salvation History” closely. Write a 3-4 sentence paragraph where you say whether this section seems closer to the analogical or dialectical approach that we discussed on Thursday. If you missed class Thursday or need a refresher on those 2 approaches, you can find it towards the end of the Portier, chapter 3 pdf.
