Half the Sky

This discussion post #2 (2 points) is based on the reality and value assumptions you already identified in the documentary “Half the Sky: Part I”, as well as anything else you remember from that documentary and from class discussion about the documentary. You should try to arrange some of the reality and value assumptions that you identified in the movie, into an argument by using standard form. What argument might be implied by this documentary – either by one segment of the 3 segments we watched, or all 3 segments taken as a whole. Although I recommend that you try to identify and set up, in standard form, an argument of Nicholas Kristoff, it also possible to identify and set up, in standard form, an argument by other people that appear in the documentary. See the further instructions and tips below as to how to proceed with this post.

INSTRUCTIONS AS TO HOW TO PROCEED WITH THIS POST:

First try to identify a conclusion. What is Nicholas Kristoff proposing, or what is his position that he is trying to defend or put forth? This could be a possible conclusion. The conclusion may or may not be explicitly stated. You are reconstructing an argument, in which case, you do not need to rely only on direct quotes. There is no argument if there is no conclusion.

Secondly, identify those assumptions that might provide support for this conclusion (as premises) and put them into standard form.

P1 (premise 1) (reasons that support the conclusion; “because”)

                                            P2 (premise 2)

                                            P3 (premise 3), etc.

                                            C: Conclusion (Therefore,….)

Thirdly, identify further evidence for some of those assumptions that you have listed as main premises, and use this further evidence to set up sub-arguments within the standard form. This further evidence may be more concrete, such as examples or statistics.

                                            P1a (further evidence for P1; called a sub-premise)

                                            P1b (further evidence for P1

P1 (premise 1, now being treated as a sub-conclusion for the above evidence; Therefore…)

                                            P2a (further evidence for P2)

P2b (further evidence for P2), etc.

P2 (premise 2, now being treated as a sub-conclusion for the above evidence; Therefore…)

                            P3 (premise 3)

                                            C: Conclusion (Therefore,…)

Examples of standard form (pp. 76, 134, 136) can be found in the text. However, sub-argument cannot be found in the text; an example of an argument in standard form which includes one sub-argument (using slightly different notation) can be found in the electronic reserves reading assignment, “Thinking Clearly” by Jill LeBlanc.

           TIPS FOR DOING THE POST:

1) Remember that the documentary might include material that is not part of an argument, and, therefore, you may leave it out, or, if it is relevant to one premise of the argument, include it as part of a sub-argument.

2) Do not simply “retell a story” – your premises should show links in the reasoning that lead up to the conclusion. That is why it is important to choose one main conclusion first, and then work backwards to the evidence or reasons used to support it. (In light of the evidence, you may also go back and revise the conclusion.)

3) You need not depend only upon direct quotes. You may also paraphrase main premises or “reconstruct” the argument by pulling (or extracting) from direct quotes, the main reasons for the conclusion, and then finding further evidence for some of these main reasons and formulating them into sub-arguments within your standard form.

4) The main premises (P1, P2, P3, etc.) usually include the more general reasons that support the conclusion. The sub-premises that support each main premise usually include the more concrete evidence, such as particular examples, any statistics, etc.

5) In reconstructing an argument, you should identify any implicit assumptions, especially as regards definitions of terms (reality assumptions) or value assumptions that may remain unstated in the actual video. In evaluating arguments, which we will eventually do, we need to identify these implicit assumptions, because this is where the controversy may lie, or this may be where there is not sufficient evidence to support the conclusion of the argument, or this may be where there is a “gap” in the logical reasoning of the argument (which we will learn is the fallacy of “begging the question”).

6) Any argument implied in the documentary might not proceed entirely in linear order or sequence, which means the conclusion might not be stated at the end or even at the beginning of the video, given that it is explicitly stated at all. That is another reason why you might want to paraphrase main premises or “reconstruct” the argument by pulling (or extracting) from different places in the documentary, the main reasons for the conclusion, and then finding further evidence from different places in the documentary for some of these main premises to formulate sub-arguments within your standard form.

7) Sub-arguments should be included within the “standard form” of the main argument, and should not be listed separately. The conclusion of a sub-argument is one of the main premises of the main argument.

8) Although standard form looks like an outline (in reverse), it is not an outline. You must use complete sentences which make statements with content. Do not say “Statistics about rape”, but rather state some of those statistics in complete sentences. Do not use short phrases, such as “Education in Vietnam”, but rather state something about the content of education in Vietnam. Moreover, the sub-premises (P1a, P1b, etc.) which support a main premise (P1, for example) should support that main premise, and not simply elaborate on that main premise. This is why indicator words are important – see pp. 62 – 63 in your text. Try to set forth the logical connections between each sub-premise and premise, etc.

World View Essays Assignments

A world view is a fundamental or basic orientation of thinking – like a mindset – which guides a culture and / or a person’s life. Like a point of view, it can be built of concepts, ideas, values, emotions, and ethics. Weltanschauung is the German word for this idea. Your goal for this course is to understand the world views of these various religions. In order to prepare you for your final assignment, you will outline the world views of various religions in the journal sections below.

For this assignment, students will complete the list of weekly items, filling in the aspects of each religion as it is presented in the readings and resources. These entries, when complete, will be the starting point for the power point presentation assignment, due in Week 10.

Review the weekly lectures and supplemental materials provided, then complete the essays by elaborating on each section related to the weekly content.

Identify key details and examples from the weekly resources to serve as a basis for the content being recorded in your essays.

Write clearly and coherently using correct grammar, punctuation, spelling, and mechanics.

Here is an example of what the essay should look like. Please be sure to use section headers & references (Your references are not limited to the book, please explore the Web/Internet). Word count should be a mininum of 500 words. Minimum of 4 sentences per paragraph/or section)

Compare and contrast deontology and utilitarianism.

The final graded assignment is an 8–10-page paper about the question: what is the good life? This assignment will be completed in four parts, so you may want to use section headers to organize your paper. This paper is somewhat cumulative, so you may need to review material from previous weeks to prepare for this essay. Remember to explain the theories you reference with supporting citations to the textbook and online lectures before contrasting them. You may want to use examples to illustrate your understanding of key ideas from each theory. Your paper should be formatted in APA style. Use this APA Citation Helper as a convenient reference for properly citing resources.

Address the following in your paper:

  1. The Consequentialism Debate: Compare and contrast deontology and utilitarianism. Briefly discuss the differences between Bentham and Mill’s versions of utilitarianism. Discuss the political and ethical implications of utilitarianism.
  2. Explain virtue ethics and care ethics and discuss how these approaches offer an alternative to the deontological and utilitarian focus on how we should act.
  3. Explain the political and ethical dimension of existentialism and at least one other social philosophy that addresses discrimination on the basis of race/ethnicity, gender, class, and/or sexual identity. The explanation of existentialism should discuss the following ideas: authenticity, ambiguity, freedom, anxiety, and bad faith.
  4. Choose a social justice issue. A social justice issue is one that characterizes and critiques a given practice, policy/law, and/or situation as unfair, unjust, and/or unethical. For example, you might discuss a specific example of discrimination on the basis of gender/sex, race, sexual identity, ethnicity, or religious faith; economic injustice/wage inequality; taxation; or a violation of an asserted human right, such as the right to gun ownership, healthcare, education, or freedom from undue government interference. A good topic will make claims to both political/social justice and ethics. Analyze the issue and discuss how some of the theories explained in parts 1–3 might relate to the issue. You may need to do additional research on the issue in order to complete this part of the assignment.

Top 10 Critical Thinking Skills.”

  1. Go back to Week 1 of this summer session and review that list of the “Top 10 Critical Thinking Skills.”
  2. After reading the above articles on the controversy related to last Wednesday’s homicide on Pier 14, and after doing a little independent research on all the facts in the case made public, please do the following:
  3. In at least 1250-1500 words, apply at least five (5) of the Top 10 Skills to this story/issue. If you were presenting in class on what makes a good critical thinker (as you did in your first assignment), how would you break down this issue? What are the questions that you would raise? What are the biases that emerge? Anything peculiar about the way (or reason) the media has covered this so extensively?  Is there an issue with context? Are certain fallacies being deployed, and for what reasons? Can you read between the lines on anything being said or not being said? What other of the skills can you use to help us understand what’s going on here?

Please show what sources of information you used (nothing too formal, just a quick parenthetical citation). You can certainly use more than five of the listed skills, and you can add whatever else you’d like in your discussion.

Finally, you don’t have to be experts on crime or immigration or media coverage to write an effective essay. Simply use your critical thinking antennae, which should allow you to bring up some good questions and critiques.

So again, and basically, I want you to teach a lesson on critical thinking that comes from your observations about any or all aspects of this story.

” This past weekend, a terrible tragedy hit an unlikely place in San Francisco when a local woman was shot and killed at Pier 14, an area heavily trafficked by tourists. I was actually in the area with some members of my family here visiting, and so was interested to see this awful story on the news later. At the time, it seemed like just so many other senseless gun-related tragedies, and I figured the news would soon move on to the next dramatic headline.

But this story has developed legs, made even more dramatic and controversial because of some of the facts that emerged about the shooter, and especially because the story has been made into a “lesson” around the issue of immigration.

It’s political season…well, not really, but since presidential candidates are vying for early attention, people are starting to make big statements. This local tragedy has now evolved into much discussion, debate, hot air reaction and news coverage.

So when Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump was quick to seize on this story and add to his recent controversial comments about immigrants, it made big news. He wasn’t alone, as other conservatives soon offered their conclusions, followed by immigrant rights activists weighing in and now embattled San Francisco city officials defending their “Sanctuary City” policies.

The issue of immigration, much less undocumented immigration, is complex indeed. But the basic conflict that has elevated it to national urgency for the last 10-15 years has been the fact that between 10-12 million people are here in the U.S. without legal papers. The political question related to immigration reform has been debated endlessly and with very little concrete action taken. It’s a hot button issue, as you know. Saturday’s tragedy has inadvertently pressed that button once again. We could have looked at other issues, but it’s current, and at least for us here in the Bay Area, it is local. It is also relevant as a critical issue to consider in Ethnic Studies. It is just the kind of issue we’d be talking about in class anyway.

OK, on to the work:

Here are a couple of recent articles about the controversy stemming from Saturday’s crime. Please read and familiarize yourselves with the case and then please do an additional search for other facts related to the story.

1. “SF Pier Killing Resonating in Campaigns, Immigration Debate.”http://www.sfchronicle.com/crime/article/S-F-pier-killing-resonating-in-campaigns-6369350.php

2. “Fatal Shooting in San Francisco Ignites Immigration Policy Debate.”http://www.latimes.com/local/california/la-me-0705-sf-shooting-20150705-story.html#page=1

Top 10 Critical Thinking Skills:

  1. Asking relevant questions
  2. Detecting bias
  3. Checking our own “frame of reference” and assumptions
  4. Placing issues in proper context
  5. Being consistent with logic and reasoning
  6. Recognizing the use of rhetoric and being able to read between the lines
  7. Understanding how fallacies are used
  8. Identifying alternative arguments
  9. Making distinctions between facts/evidence and unfounded claims
  10. Using all of these skills to find alternatives and solutions to social problems.

Aspects of Theories

ECE 101 Week 3 Assignment ( Learning Approaches, Theory, and Practice )

Becoming a professional in the field of early childhood education requires you to become familiar with the various developmental theories as well as research that studies the effectiveness of various learning approaches. Throughout the last two weeks, you have learned about these different theories and approaches to learning. After engaging in discussions with your classmates, you now have ideas about which theories and approaches you would like to use in your work with children. Using the steps below, you will sort through these theories and approaches to shape who you are as a teacher and what you believe about how children learn best. This assignment will also help you prepare for your final assignment.

Prior to beginning work on this assignment, access the APA Template (available in the online classroom) for assistance with the writing process, formatting, documentation, and citations in your written work.

Step 1: Reflect back on your initial response in the “Aspects of Theories” discussion from Week Two and the “Learning Approaches” discussion from this week. Using the theories and approaches that were discussed, fill in the table below by ranking each according to how you connected with them (“most connected” at the top and “least connected” at the bottom (be sure to delete the example row provided).

Step 2: Using the table as a guide, research your top two theories and top two learning approaches. You will create a Prezi or a PowerPoint presentation that contains your responses to the points below as they are applied to each of your top two theories and top two learning approaches.

  • Summarize the underlying principles or ideas for this theory/approach.
  • Explain why this theory/approach is important to understand and how it will benefit your work with children.
  • Discuss how this theory/approach will help you to be an effective teacher.
  • Explain why this theory/approach is ranked at the top of your list.
  • Summarize the similarities you see between the theory and model of those you ranked first. For example, if Piaget’s theory of cognitive development was your top theory and the Reggio Emilia approach was your top learning approach, share how these two ideas support one another.

Step 3: Submit your assignment to your instructor as a Word document that contains your table from Step 1 and the hyperlink to your Prezi from Step 2 that includes your responses to the questions from Step 2. Or you can submit your assignment as a PowerPoint that contains your table from Step 1 and your responses to the questions from Step 2. Whichever option you choose, you will also need to follow APA format and include title and reference pages. In addition, the information in your assignment needs to be supported by the textbook and at least two additional scholarly sources. Be sure to cite your sources in the Prezi or PowerPoint and list them on the reference page/slides. If you need assistance with making sure that your paper or references are properly formatted in APA, please utilize the APA Guidance link that is located within the Learning Resources tab on the left hand side of the course or visit the Ashford Writing Center.

Differentiated Classrooms

Ashford 4: – Week 3 – Assignment

CCSS & Differentiated Classrooms

What we have learned so far in this course is that students come to us from diverse backgrounds and have their own unique learning needs. We have also learned that the systems of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) are grounded in differentiated instructional practices to form the basis of quality curriculum.

As noted in Week Two, you participate in your school’s Professional Learning Community (PLC) as developing experts in implementing differentiated instruction. For this assignment, you will create the content for a blog (not actually creating the blog at this time) that identifies differentiated assessment and teaching strategies. These strategies can be used to assess student mastery of the new Common Core State Standards while providing engaging and rigorous classroom instruction.

For the purpose of this assignment, you will be using a Word document (two to three pages) to create a prospective blog that can be designed online at another time.

Within your blog, you must:

  • Describe (in general) the standards for mathematics.
  • Describe (in general) the standards for English language arts.
  • Summarize the Common Core State Standards initiative including their purpose (i.e., the expectations of the CCSS) and academic impact.
  • Discuss how differentiated instruction is an essential strategy for the CCSS.
  • Explain five or more differentiated strategies, tools, or activities that will support teachers’ implementation of the CCSS for mathematics.
  • Explain five or more differentiated strategies, tools, or activities that will support teachers’ implementation of the CCSS for English language arts.

Use your course text and at least two scholarly articles from the Ashford University Library or Google Scholar to support your research. Your paper will be formatted according to APA guidelines including title and reference pages.
