Culturally Relevant Methods

Throughout this course you will develop an ePortfolio that includes evidence of your cultural competence in each of the following areas:

  • Culturally Relevant Methods
  • Anti-Bias Curriculum
  • Diverse Family Structures
  • Multicultural Education
This week, you will complete the first section of an ePortfolio, which will demonstrate your cultural competence in using culturally relevant methods.  Since this is the first component in your ePortfolio you will need to begin your ePortfolio.  You will use  GoogleSites to create your portfolio.  Review the “Creating an ePortfolio” job aid and the Example ePortfolio for guidance.

Using Chapters 1 and 2 of your text and at least one additional scholarly source, compile a list of 20 culturally competent strategies for English language learners (ELLs).  At least five of your strategies should be appropriate for infants/toddlers, five strategies should be appropriate for preschool, and five strategies should be appropriate for early elementary age.  You may select the age level for the five remaining strategies.
Your chart should include the following:

    Name of StrategyAge GroupDefinitionClassroom Example

In addition to the completed chart, include an APA title page and reference page.  Utilize at least one scholarly source in addition to the text to support your ideas, and cite all sources in APA format as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center. Include a link to your ePortfolio on a Word document for submission.

In Week Two, you sat in the CFO chair, studied a real world hospital Accounts Receivable (AR) problem with your team, and came up with a Process Improvement Plan to reduce Days in Accounts Receivable and improve cash flow to you hospital. Well the great news is that your plan worked! This morning your Days in AR stand at 67. Not perfect…. but much better, and you have five payrolls of cash on hand right now. Things are looking up for Community Memorial! And then just before lunch you get a call from the Bill Jacobs, Human Resource Director at Commercial Intertech (CI), the largest employer in the community. Bill says, “I wanted you to hear it from me first. We signed a contract yesterday with MegaPlan Health. They will be the managed care organization for all 4,500 of our employees and their families. About 9,000 patients total. I’m sure that you will want to get a contract with MegaPlan as soon as possible. I noticed that your hospital is not on their Preferred Provider Network (PPN), and I am pretty sure that you will want to be, so that our employees can continue using the facility.” By the time you thank Bill for the heads up, the acid is already churning in your stomach. In the hospital world, MegaPlan is known for cut-throat tactics, negotiating steep discounts with hospitals, and fighting every claim the hospital makes. Commercial Intertech has every right to contract with any health insurance provider they like, but now you have a problem. If you cannot get a decent contract with MegaPlan and become part of their Preferred Provider Network (PPN), many local patients may bypass your hospital and go the next closest PPN facility. Delivered to your office this afternoon, by no coincidence, is a contract proposal from MegaPlan. It calls for the hospital to provide a 35% discount from charges to MegaPlan and all of its members. And it includes service pre-authorization requirements which will make life very difficult for your business office. You know from experience that the hospital loses money whenever the discount from charges exceeds 20%

Your Role

You are the hospital CFO, trying to solve the managed care problem

From the three topics attached endeavor where possible to make connections/links between articles. In the body of the paper make sure that you provide page number
references when you are quoting directly (p. 12) <(like that). Include these main topics in the paper.
1)kind of ethnographic fieldwork did the author conduct? Is it clear how much time was spent doing ethnographic fieldwork? Also how does the author include themselves in the article (if they do at all)? Do they share in day-to-day work? Do they have a fictive kin status in the fieldsite where they conducted research? What events did they attend (on a regular basis?) in support of the research discussed in the article?
Do we get much of a sense of the anthropologist being present in the field or not?
(2)Methodsand Presentation Data: What kind of data did the author collect? And then, what did the author do with this data/ how was it analyzed? By data I mean the raw material the author collects that is what their findings are ultimately based on. Is their data based on
interviews with individuals? Attending church services? Listening to/recording radio or other media programs? Documents? Hanging out on a porch? A combination of resources? Photos/Figures/Maps/Tables: Also, in the article, does the author use photographs, drawings, and/or tables or figures? Photographs/figures can be a very important part of how the author helps makes their case/prove a point. Excerpts/Quotes: Also this is extremely important for 388, but also valuable in (480) what kinds of excerpts/direct quotes might an author include in their article?
Does the author include direct quotes from informants? … or excerpts of songs/prayers/texts? If the author does this, they are using primary datawords collected directly from a person or a spoken/sung/written text that is important/key to their discussion. Pay special attention to these, and try to find ways to include direct quotation from these kinds of passages in your paper. (Always include a page number reference when you quote directly from an article).
(3)The role of religion/major findings/authors contributions to anthropology of religion How EXACTLY is religion a part of the analysis? How is religion viewed/looked at? How is religion working in the particular case focused on in the articles youre looking at? How does it effect/inform social relations? Does the article focus on issues of belief or practice? In all scholarly articles like the ones you are reading for this assignment, authors will discuss both what their findings are as well as what is special or unique about these findings (their contributions). Findings: There may be one main finding, or several. In each case, the author will have conducted research that ultimately yielded some kind of report-able finding.
One tip on working on this project is to look at the conclusion before reading the
entire article so that you know what to anticipate so you can watch how the author develops their argument/discussion that leads up to their conclusion/findings. Contributions:In academic writing, it is important for authors to make some kind of claim not just about what their findings are, but regarding how their research and findings show or do something new. This something new or even just slightly different angle
is considered what they have contributed to the anthropological study of religion. What is the hook in each article youre focusing on that the author claims is special/new/has been previously overlooked/underappreciated, etc. The unique/special contribution could be very modest, but authors must always in some way make a claim about what they did that hadnt been done before. Warning: It is also an important part of academic writing to place oneself within a line or argument/theory. What that means is that much space in these articles will be devoted to some kind of engagement with theoretical argument. I am not asking that students report on this. This part of academic articles is typically full of difficult jargon for non-specialists and I dont expect you to engage with it or understand it all. Please dont stress about the theoretical arguments too much. Try to focus on the type of fieldwork anthropologists did, what kind of data they focused on and collected and described in the article, what their central findings seem to be, and how they claim they have contributed something interesting and new to an anthropology of religion.

1. In 1970, Ford Motors began making the compact model called the Pinto. The model became a focus of a major scandal when it was alleged that the car’s design allowed its fuel tank to be easily damaged in a rear-end collision which sometimes resulted in deadly fires. Critics argued that the vehicle’s lack of a true rear bumper as well as any reinforcing structure between the rear panel and the tank meant that in certain collisions, the tank would be thrust forward into the differential, which had a number of protruding bolts that could puncture the tank. Ford allegedly was aware of this design flaw but refused to pay for a redesign. Instead, it was argued, Ford decided it would be cheaper to pay off possible lawsuits for resulting deaths. Mother Jones magazine obtained the cost-benefit analysis that it said Ford had used to compare the cost of an $11 repair against the monetary value of a human life, in what became known as the Ford Pinto memo. The characterization of Ford’s design decision as gross disregard for human lives in favor of profits led to significant lawsuits. While Ford was acquitted of criminal charges, it lost several million dollars and gained a reputation for manufacturing “the barbecue that seats four.” Was Ford’s reasoning in refusing to pay for a redesign an example of utilitarianism? Explain why or why not.

2. Here are three important moral factors that utilitarians have been accused of ignoring: intentions, character, individual rights. Pick one of these factors that you think you could be defended on utilitarian grounds—does it always maximize happiness, for example, to have good intentions?—sketch what the criticism might be, and give your short defense of utilitarian thinking.

Performance Pay for Teachers Background

Topic 1: Performance Pay for Teachers Background

In recent years, some school districts (e.g., Nashville in Tennessee) have passed measures designed to reward teachers for high levels of performance. These “pay for performance” plans are sometimes called “merit pay” or “bonus pay” plans. Education Secretary Arne Duncan is a strong supporter of these plans.

Brief

Consider a district other than Nashville that is implemented one of these plans recently. Based on your investigation of the issues involved in implementing the plan, do you think that performance pay for teachers is likely to improve student outcomes?

Suggestions

First, summarize the relevant background information. What were the arguments leading up to the plan? Who was for and against the plan? What exactly does the plan involve? Second, assess the extent to which you think the plan will incentivize teachers. At this point you need to be creative: think about the terms of the plan (e.g., the relative size of the reward) and the likely pressures that teachers face (e.g., from other teachers, parents). Try to get information on whether teachers felt like the plan gave them strong incentives. An obvious source here is the local teachers union: they probably have the best information on these plans and, in my experience, these people are generally helpful and knowledgeable (if not impartial). Third, go beyond the particular plan that you study to think about the extent to which the issues that you have discussed will be relevant to other pay plans or whether certain problems could have been avoided had the plan been designed differently.
