Watch an episode of CSI (any of the versions) on network TV or by using an Internet service such as Hulu.com. Take notes about actions taken by the scientists. Then, write an analysis of the episode, detailing which actions taken are realistic and which ones are not. For two actions that are not realistic, discuss what the scientists would have done if the scenes were always realistic.

Although this is only a draft, you should try and get as close to this decription as possible.  Have a paper that is mainly done will allow you to receive the maximum amount of feedback from your Peer Reviews.

Project Description:

Watch an episode of CSI (any of the versions) on network TV or by using an Internet service such as Hulu.com. Take notes about actions taken by the scientists. Then, write an analysis of the episode, detailing which actions taken are realistic and which ones are not. For two actions that are not realistic, discuss what the scientists would have done if the scenes were always realistic.

You need to use outside sources when writing this paper. The sources you use for this assignment should include at least two outside sources or articles. One of your outside sources can be any of the provided classroom readings. Significant amounts of information from these outside sources should be incorporated into your paper. Wikipedia is NOT an appropriate outside source for any college level paper and should not be used as an outside source in this paper. Also, your CSI episode should be referenced but does not count as one of your two other outside sources.

In addition to presenting information from your sources, do some significant critical thinking in applying the course material and material from the outside sources to the CSI episode and your analysis of this episode. To show your critical thinking and that you incorporated your outside references into your paper, no more than 10% of your paper may be quotations.  The majority of your paper must be written in your own words.

Make sure that you provide citations throughout your paper.  Remember that for any information you receive from outside sources, whether you quote it, paraphrase it or summarize it, you must provide citations telling the reader where that outside information came from. Make sure that you provide citations for the episode as well as your outside sources.

Your paper should contain the following items:

Cover/Title Page

  • Body of Paper
    • 900-1,500 words long
    • Introduction
    • Short episode synopsis
    • Episode Analysis, including the following items:
    • Realistic and non-realistic actions taken by the actors
    • 2 non-realistic actions further discussed
    • 2 non-realistic actions analyzed for how those actions would have been performed in the “real world”
    • Analysis must incorporate information received from 2 outside sources
    • Conclusion
  • References Page

Format of Paper

  • Times New Roman font ONLY
  • 12 point font
  • 1 inch margins (you will have to change your margins if using Word 2003 or earlier)
  • Double Spaced

The paper does not need an abstract. It should be in APA format, including the citations and the References.

What is philosophy? What does philosophy do? Obviously, the latter option is much more creative and implies a great deal of freedom, but it would also require seeing the bigger picture of what we have been doing this quarter, as well as some mastery of everything that we have read. The first option requires you to write 1-1.5 page (Times New Roman, font 12, double-spaced, .docx) response to each question. The second option requires you to write a 3-5 page essay (again, Times New Roman, font 12, double-spaced, .docx). The choice is yours. The exams are to be submitted to D2l before the deadline.

Philosophy Paper 4-5 pages

Another option for the final paper is to try to answer the following question, by looking at the philosophical texts that we have read during this quarter:

Nicomachean Ethics by Aristotle ( Tr. Joe Sachs, Focus Philosophical Library); ISBN-13: 9781585100354

Discourse on Method and Meditations on First Philosophy by Rene Descartes

What is philosophy? What does philosophy do?

•Did the creator (i.e. author) of the narrative have an intent other than to entertain? •Did the choice of narrative “type” (i.e. a poem vs. a movie) play a role in the function of rhetoric in the narrative?

SPC 3230 Context, Story, Display Paper

For this paper, you will need to rely extensively on your text. I suggest you read it carefully. For further insight, you can look into the following authors and their respective contributions to the study of rhetoric (as highlighted in the chapter):

•Kenneth Burke……………… Rhetoric as Symbolic Action •Lloyd Bitzer………………………… Rhetoric as Situational •Mikhail Bakhtin and Wayne Booth…. Rhetoric as Narration
•Carole Blair and Lester Olson………… Rhetoric as Display

Choose a narrative:

•Novel
•Movie
•Poem
•Short story •Play

•Etc.
Recalling the functions of rhetoric, discuss how rhetoric functions in the narrative. Here are

some questions you may want to consider in your analysis:

•Did the creator (i.e. author) of the narrative have an intent other than to entertain?
•Did the choice of narrative “type” (i.e. a poem vs. a movie) play a role in the function of

rhetoric in the narrative?
•Is the narrative used to “bring together individuals separated from one another by alienation

and competition” (p. 210)?
•Does Burke’s concept of identification play a role?
•Is there extensive use of symbolism in the narrative?
•Can the narrative be analyzed in terms of Burke’s dramatistic pentad?
•Is there form (i.e. syllogistic, qualitative, conventional) in the narrative?
•How did the situation (per Bitzer) play a role in the rhetoric of the narrative? Consider

exigence, audience, contstraints, response.
•What role does language (per Bakhtin) play in the rhetoric of the narrative?
•Is the creator’s (i.e. author’s) voice (per Bakhtin and Booth) evident in the narrative?
•What role do images (“The Rhetoric of Display”) have in the rhetoric of the narrative?
Not that these questions are not meant to be answered in your paper. They are rhetorical!…meant to make you think on the topic.

Please be sure to draw on direct examples from the narrative in support of your points.

What factors contribute to the group’s cohesiveness? Be sure to refer to Chapter 8 of your text and use specific scenes from the movie.

Paper: will submit a 4-5 page paper that answers and responds to the questions given on the movie Breakfast Club. The paper will be submitted to Turnitin.com. You will be graded on the content of your answer, the reasoning/argument you make between the theory and the facts of the case study as well as writing (grammar and punctuation). You will need to watch the movie and provide your own analysis (You may be able to get the movie at such places like iTunes, Amazon, Netflix, Red Box, etc.)

Description of Movie

The Breakfast Club takes place at an Illinois high school, where five dissimilar students are sentenced to spend a Saturday detention session together. In attendance is a “princess” (Ringwald), an “athlete” (Estevez), a brain” (Hall), a “criminal” (Nelson), and a “basket case” (Sheedy). These titles identify the roles the student play during the school week. Because of stereotypes and status levels associated with each role, the students want nothing to do with each other at the outset of the session. However, when confronted by the authoritarian detention teacher (Gleason) and by eight hours of time to kill, the students begin to interact. Through self-disclosure they learn that they are more similar than different. Each wrestles with self-acceptance; each longs for parental approval; each fights against peer pressure. They break through the role barriers and gain greater understanding and acceptance of each other and of themselves. They

ultimately develop a group identity and dub themselves, “The Breakfast Club.”

Some Points to Address in Paper:

1. In the film 5 people come together to be apart of a group detention session. Discuss the group’s developmental stages as stated in Chapter Two of the text. Be sure to address

each developmental stage and refer to the scene in the movie that that the stage began and

then moved to the next.

  1. What factors contribute to the group’s cohesiveness? Be sure to refer to Chapter 8 of your

text and use specific scenes from the movie.

  2. To what extent did members effectively understand, remember, interpret, evaluate, and

respond to one another’s statements and questions? Be sure to refer to Chapter 7 of your

text and use specific scenes from the movie.

  3. What group roles and related listening skills could group members have used to resolve

the problem at hand and to come together as a group? Be sure to refer to Chapter 7 of

your text and use specific scenes from the movie.

  4. How did the diversity of the 5 students hinder their ability to come together as a group?

Be sure to refer to Chapter 4 of your text and use specific scenes from the movie.

  5. Talk about each of the roles the 5 students play in the movie, then address how these

roles affected their attitudes and behavior as a member of the group detention session. Be sure to refer to Chapter 3 of your text and use specific scenes from the movie.

For your first formal paper, reexamine the stories “Kelemo’s Woman” by Molara Wood and “Growing My Hair Again” by Chika Unigwe. Consider the complicated experiences of the women narrators, their customs, their relationships with men and with other women. Are these moral women? What makes their decisions morally acceptable or morally unjustifiable?

Composition II

Context

Recently, we have been focusing on literature from the region of Nigeria. Two of our readings, in particular, raise issues that are specific to womanhood. The narrator of “Kelemo’s Woman,” for instance, must make difficult decisions regarding her body and her morality. In “Growing My Hair Again,” the narrator faces complex circumstances with regard to her husband, and she too makes some difficult choices, both in the way she interacts with other women and with regard to her body.

Assignment

For your first formal paper, reexamine the stories “Kelemo’s Woman” by Molara Wood and “Growing My Hair Again” by Chika Unigwe. Consider the complicated experiences of the women narrators, their customs, their relationships with men and with other women. Are these moral women? What makes their decisions morally acceptable or morally unjustifiable?

·             Please write in the position that both of them are morally acceptable.

You will need to construct a strong and debatable thesis statement that takes a stand on this issue. Then, you will need to support your position using evidence from the texts. This will require close reading and analysis. You will need to quote small portions of the text, so be sure to properly integrate and cite quotations. Remember, you are not just summarizing here; you are making an original argument that you must support.

Details

This essay should be a minimum of three full double-spaced pages. It must have an introduction with a strong, debatable thesis statement, supporting body paragraphs begin with strong topic sentence and provide evidence from the texts, and a conclusion paragraph.

Use specific examples. Do not generalize. Avoid cliché. And watch your grammar. Turn in something polished and professional. This means using an appropriate font. I prefer Times New Roman or Garamond 12pt. Please give your essay a unique title.
