Do you think public schools should ban or restrict the sale of unhealthy foods in an effort to reduce childhood obesity?

As rates of childhood obesity have increased, so too have calls for action to help prevent and reduce it. School lunches and vending machines have been at the center of many of these efforts. Recent federal, state, and local legislation has aimed to require schools to eliminate so-called junk food and provide more healthy options for students. In 2004, as part of the Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act, Congress stipulated that all school districts in the country form school wellness committees and develop policies and plans relating to nutrition and physical education. As a result of this mandate, many states, including New Jersey, Connecticut, California, and Oregon, banned or restricted the sale of junk food in school cafeterias and campus vending machines. Moreover, the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act, signed into law by President Obama in 2010, gives the USDA the authority to set nutritional standards for all foods sold in public schools, meaning the trend of restricting the sale of unhealthy foods in schools will likely continue in the future.

Many people agree with this approach, arguing that childhood obesity is a serious public health issue that threatens the wellness of children for years to come and demands a strong response. Others, however, disagree, arguing that banning certain foods in schools infringes on personal freedom and does not address the root problems of childhood obesity. In this Discussion, you will consider your own opinion on this issue in light of this week’s Learning Resources as well as your own experiences.Reflect on the following:

  • Do you think public schools should ban or restrict the sale of unhealthy foods in an effort to reduce childhood obesity? Or is this approach too extreme? Why?
  • What concerns or arguments might parents, students, and school staff voice if your opinion on this issue was implemented? How would you address these concerns

Post an explanation of your opinion on whether or not the sale of junk food should be restricted or banned in public schools. In addition, identify at least one concern that might arise if your view was implemented at a school, and explain how you might respond to this concern. Be sure to use the Learning Resources to support your thinking.

How did the Gospel writers view and interpret the Old Testament?

Discussion Prompt:

Darrell Back said, “You are never going to understand what these stories in the Gospels and Acts are doing without learning more about the culture of first-century Judaism.  It is just not going to happen.  If we simply read the stories without taking that step, we will superimpose our cultural scripts on the stories and change them into something they were never intended to be.”

Consider the above quotation, the class discussion and readings from sessions 1 and 2 from both textbooks.

1) How did the Gospel writers view and interpret the Old Testament?  2) What is the role of literary and historical context in studying Scripture?  300 words count

Describe A loyal customer to Hitler from 1908-1913, tragically, Morgenstern and his wife perished in the Holocaust (Hamann, 1999).

Based on the following excerpt, please design a Psychological Assessment. Your Assessment will include
1) the client’s Social/Behavioral History,
2) Medical Evaluation,
3) Psychosocial Assessment,
4) Diagnosis
5) appropriate Treatment. Please note: your “client” in this instance is an historic figure no longer living; therefore, your Psychological Assessment lies entirely in the realm of fiction. (As this is an historic figure, you may utilize additional {credible} sources for background information when creating your Assessment.) Finally, Objectivity is essential. Please credit sources per APA format, and, use attached Rubric and course textbook (Chaps. 7 & 10) to complete Post. Chapters 7 & 10 are where students should look in your effort to diagnose Hitler. (Rudolf) Hausler and (Reinhold) Hanisch, Dr. Edouard Bloch, August Kubizek and Samuel Morgenstern, his former fellow residents in the men’s hostel (homeless shelter), and his schoolmates in Linz were astonished by his career…which began in 1919. Not one of them would have considered anything like that possible. His former colleagues understood even less why the same person who had once gotten along with Jews especially well was now all of a sudden supposed to be a leading…antisemite….he was a physically weak eccentric who avoided regular work, became engrossed in strange theories about the creation of the world, and idolized his people. He was a “quarrelsome fellow” with a hot temper who always had to be right and during discussions talked until others were finished off. What was most conspicuous about him was his mental rigidity, his inflexibility and inhibition, his fear of women, and his inability to be merry and have a good time with others. His admirer Kubizek said: ‘Being carefree and letting go…no, he could never do that.’ And: ‘He hated the typical Viennese from the bottom of his heart. He couldn’t even stand their mellifluous, really very melodious way of speaking. Above all, however, he hated the Viennese way of forever blundering along and living from one day to the next without a care in the world. Personally, he was entirely the opposite in that respect” (Hamann, 1999, p. 403).The “client” is, of course, Adolf Hitler.Source: Hamann, B. (1999). Hitler’s Vienna: A Dictator’s Apprenticeship. Oxford University Press.SOME BACKGROUND ON ADOLF HITLERS RELATIONSHIPS PRIOR TO THE NAZI ASSUMPTION OF POWER AND THE HOLOCAUST.*August Kubizek and Rudolf Hausler were self-identified friends of Hitler. Kubizek met Hitler in 1903, Hausler in 1913. Both men were antisemitic (Hamann, 1999).*Klara Hitler died from breast cancer in December 1907; his father, Alois, had died in 1903. Hitler at the age of 19 moved to Vienna, capital of Austria-Hungary. The year was 1908. Kubizek joined him and they shared a room in a boardinghouse. Famously, it was during this time that Hitler applied for admittance at Vienna’s Academy of Fine Arts. He was rejected for the second time (they had already rejected him in 1907). Too ashamed to admit this to Kubizek, Hitler moved away with notifying him. They would not speak again for 30 years after Hitler became the Fuhrher of Germany and Austria (Hamann, 1999).Hitler could not collect the inheritance left him by his father until he reached his 25th birthday. But he could collect the interest. His older sister Angela convinced him to give that money to their younger sister, Paula. Because he would not work, Hitler lived for the next five (1908-1913) years in homeless shelters for men (Hamann, 1999).*Reinhold Hanisch, antisemite, was a fellow resident in men’s shelter with Hitler. He was also Hitler’s business partner (Hanisch found customers to commission and buy Hitler’s paintings). The two became enemies when Hanisch tried to defraud Hitler (he took commissions for himself). Siegfried Loffner, a Jewish resident of the shelter and friend of Hitler, hauled Hanisch before the police on Hitler’s behalf (Hamann, 1999).*Dr. Edward Bloch, Hitler family physician. Dr. Bloch was Jewish. He treated the young Adolf for colds, etc. He also treated Hitler’s mother, Klara, for breast cancer. When Hitler became Fuhrer (literally, Leader), he interceded on Dr. Bloch’s behalf. Bloch wanted to leave Austria, but was delayed by the Nazi government. He sent a letter to Hitler requesting his help. Miraculously, Hitler received the letter and immediately set out to help. Because of Hitlers intervention, Dr. Bloch was permitted to sell his property at a fair price (and keep the money!). At this time, Jews emigrating from the Third Reich were not allowed to keep the proceeds of the sale of their property. It went directly to the Nazi government (Hamann, 1999).Even more astonishing, until Dr. Bloch and his wife could emigrate, Hitler had them placed under the Gestapo’s protection. They emigrated to the United States in 1939 (Hamann, 1999). Unfortunately, Dr. Bloch’s credentials were not recognized in the US, so he could no longer practice medicine. He died a broken man in 1945 at the age of 73 (Hamann, 1999).*Samuel Morgenstern was a Jewish glazier who commissioned paintings from Hitler between 1908 and 1913. When life became difficult for Jews living in the German Reich, Morgenstern reached out to Hitler just like Dr. Bloch. The letter never reached Hitler. A loyal customer to Hitler from 1908-1913, tragically, Morgenstern and his wife perished in the Holocaust (Hamann, 1999).

What is Social Justice?

What is Social Justice? Consider the following situation: You now stand behind what the philosopher John Rawls calls the veil of ignorance. This means that you do not know who you are, or what your situation is within society. You do not know what race, sex, ethnicity or sexual orientation you have. You do not know if you are in a family that is worth millions of dollars, on one that based on a single parent who works two jobs and struggles hard just to bring in $35,000 a year. You do not know if you tend to be a sick or healthy person; or, whether or not you need glasses, a hearing aid, insulin, a wheelchair, a kidney, help with a learning disability, or infertility treatment. All you have is your ability to reason, and a desire for a just society. But you also know that once you are done with your task of laying the groundwork for this society, the wheel of fate will be spun for you many times. It will be spun once to choose your sex, once for your race, once for the kind of body you will have, once for intelligence, once for your age, once for family structure, once for family income, and so on. In other words, you are going to have to live in the society you are creating; but you dont know where you are going to be in this society. You will have to create a society without any knowledge of what you special interests might be. Your assignment is to write a two to three page paper (from 700 to 1000 words), which responds to the following question: What are one or two general principles of justice, which should be used to govern, within a just society? As you develop your two principles, bring in support from any two of the political philosophers that you have been reading in Chapter Ten. Use their ideas to help think through and defend your choice of principles. These may be philosophers that you agree with, disagree with, or, perhaps, a little of both. Your paper should be organized into the four sections described below. Please use the section headings, Part One, Part Two, Part Three and Part Four, within your paper. Part One: Area of Philosophy. Write an introduction to your paper, which clearly identifies a general area of philosophy, within which the philosophical problem that you will be exploring can be found. Refer to Chapter One if you need to review these areas. Do you think that the question posed above place your discussion within Metaphysics, Theory of Knowledge, Ethics, Political Philosophy, and/or Philosophy of Religion? Part one of your paper should be brief and concise. No more than 50 to 100 words maximum. Part Two: Argument Analysis: Present the points of view, and the arguments supporting those views, from the two philosophers you have chosen to discuss this philosophical questions with you. Summarize and pick these arguments apart a little. What are the main premises of their arguments? Does they make any important assumptions? What evidence do they present that is factual and verifiable? And what evidence do they present that is more a matter of speculation and/or interpretation? In this section of your paper you are merely analyzing, or, picking apart the arguments. Do not draw any conclusions as to whether or not these arguments are valid and/or sound. This section of your paper should be at least 250 words. Part Three: Argument Evaluation. In this section present and defend some judgments about these arguments. Are these premises safe to accept? Are there any questionable assumptions made? If we do accept them do they take us logically to their conclusions? Your evaluation should make explicit use of concepts such as assumption, soundness and validity, as these are presented within Chapter One of the text. This section of your paper should be at least 250 words. Part Four: Conclusion. Draw your own interesting and relevant conclusions about the philosophical problem you are exploring. Do not merely offer a set of “feelings” or an opinion. Instead, build your own argument, regarding the questions above. If you find that you are in agreement with some of the philosopher’s ideas, then you can use these as part of your own argument, so long as you do not merely reiterate what they are saying. After you have stated what your principles of justice are, apply your principles to any two of the following questions: In a just society, how will health care be organized? In a just society, how will education be organized? In a just society, how will taxation be structured? In a just society, how will you handle vices such as drugs, alcohol, pornography, unhealthy food, etc.? In a just society, what role will the government regulation take? For example, the regulation of business, the environment, or the behavior of individuals who engage in vice, or the behavior of people who are intolerant and/or discriminatory toward others? In a just society, (you decide how to complete this one) Be very clear and explicit as to how your answers to these questions are based on the political philosophy that you have developed in the first part of your paper. This part of your paper should be 300 words minimum.

Goodness of Fit: Calculate the coefficient of determination and comment on the goodness of fit.

The analysis section should include the following sections:
1- Model Building: Explain your model in terms of the cause and effect i.e. clarify the dependent and the independent variables in your model. State and explain your hypothesis (theory) about a possible relationship between your dependent and the independent variables i.e. the type and the direction of the relationship between these variables should be explained. Example there is a significant direct (or indirect) linear relationship between Var1 and Var2. If you wanted to develop a multi-variable model, what other factors you would have included in your model. Explain the determination of the independent and the dependent variable in your model. 2- Visualization Step: Develop a scatter diagram and conclude if there appears to be a linear or a non-linear relationship between your variables.
3- Estimation Step: Estimate the regression line. Calculate and INTERPRET the estimated slope Calculate and INTERPRET the estimated intercept.
4- Goodness of Fit: Calculate the coefficient of determination and comment on the goodness of fit. Interpret your finding.
5- Strength of linear relationship: Calculate and INTERPRET the estimated correlation coefficient. Comment on the measure of strength of the linear relationship.
6- Test of the Strength: Test the significance of the strength of linear relationship between the two variables at 1% and then at 10% level of significance. Interpret your finding. Comment on the p-value.
7- Test of the Significance: Test the significance of the linear relationship between the two variables at 5%and then at 10% level of significance. Interpret your finding. Comment on the P-value.
8- Prediction Step: Use the estimated regression equation and forecast the value of Y based on a given value of X.
9- If you wanted to develop a multi-variable model, what other factors you would have included in your model
10- Develop a multivariate model of at least 2 independent variables. Compare to your earlier model, do you get more explanatory power? Comment on the coefficients and check the significance of the model as well as each independent variable.

Define procurement and explains the relationship between procurement strategy and the business case in the construction industry

The water utilities sector is capital intensive and dependant on complex supply networks in the delivery of services. Procurement is a critical activity in this delivery. Generally, the value of external expenditure on procurement of goods and services amounts to around 55% of the revenue of water utility organisations (such as Thames Water; Southern Trent Water, Scottish Water etc). Procurement makes a substantial contribution to the overall cost or expenditure of operations and risk within the organisations supply chains. To ensure success, it is critical that organisations in the water sector strive for continual improvement in procurement and implement procurement strategies that fully align with or is integral to the organisations overall strategic vision and objectives. Continual improvements also mean not only adopting best practice, but also embracing innovation and shaping best practice. Procurement outsourcing is regarded as an innovative way to improve the procurement practice in the water utilities sector. The Water Services Regulation Authority or OFWAT is a non-ministerial government department in England and Wales. In Scotland, the equivalent is the Water Industry Commission for Scotland. They provide information, as requested, to the Treasury; the National Audit Office and the Public Accounts Committee. As the economic regulator of the water sector these organisations role is to help the sector build trust and confidence with customers and wider society. This means provoking, challenging and where appropriate leading the sector, to ensure it has clarity on what customers and society expect; overseeing how the sector is performing; seeking assurance that service providers are acting efficiently, on the basis of good information, a good understanding of the responsibilities and relationships they have and overall being ready to step in, if service providers fall short. You have been asked jointly by OFWAT and the Water Industry Commission for Scotland to write a report that, – Defines procurement and explains the relationship between procurement strategy and the business case in the construction industry 30% – Defines procurement outsourcing in the in the context of Water utilities sector 30% – Explains are the pros and cons of outsourcing procurement in general and the water industry in particular 15% – Explains the key issues to be taken into consideration when making the decision to outsource procurement and when evaluating and selecting an outsourced procurement service provider? -15% – Presentation 10% Word Count: 2300
