Midterm: Oral Interpretation Analysis task

Midterm: Oral Interpretation Analysis task

Students will analyze their communication artifact for their oral interpretation project. The artifact is an excerpt from the movie “ANTZ”. The artifact to analyze in the paper is provided here….

The Insignificance of Being an Ant:

The animated film’s main character was neurotic drone ant Z-4195 (or “Z”/Zee) (voice of Woody Allen), living in a conformist, totalitarian ant society, without any individuality. In his opening monologue, he complained about his insignificant life during therapy to his psychologist (Paul Mazursky), who concluded their discussion with the statement that Zee had made a break-through: (“Yes, Z, you are insignificant”):

“All my life, I’ve lived and worked in the big city, which now that I think of it, is kind of a problem since I always feel uncomfortable around crowds. I mean it, I-I have this fear of enclosed spaces. I-I-I, everything makes me feel trapped all the time. You know, I always tell myself, there’s gotta be something better out there, but maybe I think too much.

I-I-I think everything must go back to the fact that I had a very anxious childhood. You know, my, my mother never had time for me. You know, when you’re – when you’re the middle child in a family of five million, you don’t get any attention. I mean, how’s it possible?

And I’ve always had these, these abandonment issues, which plagued me. My father was basically a drone like I’ve said, and, you know, the guy flew away when I was just a larva. And my job, don’t get me started on, ’cause it really annoys me. I was not cut out to be a worker, I’ll tell you right now. I-I-I feel physically inadequate. I, I, my whole life I’ve never, I’ve neverbeen able to lift more than ten times my own body weight, and, and when you get down to it, handling dirt is, you know, ewwww, is not my idea of a rewarding career. It’s this whole gung-ho super-organism thing that, that, that I – you know, I can’t get, I try but I can’t get it. I mean you know, what is it, I’m supposed to do everything for the colony, and, and what about my needs? What about me? I mean, I gotta believe there’s someplace out there that’s better than this! Otherwise, I will just curl up in a larval position and weep! The whole system makes me feel – insignificant!”

In this analytical essay students, will complete the following:

Students will include their rationale for the artifact. (ATTACHED IN THE FILES BELOW)

Students will conduct an internal and external analysis.

Students will compare and contrast their artifact to at least one other oral interpretation performance (pick one).

Students will identify a theory from the course text that is utilized in the analysis of their artifact.

Students will determine the validity of their artifact after analysis for oral interpretation performance.

Paper will be in FULL APA formatting and be at least 750 words.

Oral Interpretation Project Rationale

Oral Interpretation Project Rationale

PROJECT RATIONALE

Oral Interpretation Project Rationale

Hayley Witham

COMM 333

California Baptist University

Introduction

My oral interpretation project is unique in the sense that it is a monologue of a single ant named “Z”. This ant is no ordinary ant, it is an ant from the DreamWorks movie, “Antz”. The movie portrays “Z”, the worker ant, who tries to analyze and explore his own individuality among the ant colony, and in doing so, discovers love, drama, and danger along the way.

Type of Performance

My project focuses on a mock therapy session Z is having “with himself”. It is a drama filled conversation with an ant therapist sitting next to him, however, he seems to only be talking to himself. Woody Allen is the voice of the ant, Z, and this opening scene depicts him to be in a destructive mode giving the audience a sense of drama. Therefore, this performance will be a type of drama with some comedy possibly thrown into the mix. In our text, Bell states, in the drama view of a performance, humans are “actors” who play roles; human activities are conceived as actions, acts, scenes, and events and they are driven by motives, intentions and purposes and interaction between humans relies on conflict (Bell, 2008). Conflict is a part of any social group, class or society. In the movie, “Antz”, there is a theme of social injustice and inequality. This constitutes a dramatic performance and this, is what I believe my project topic is to be. It is also important to have meaning or a connection to the piece. According to nfcfl.org, you must feel a connection to the material. You cannot expect an audience to get excited over a piece that has no meaning for you.

Due to the dramatic layout of the scene I chose in the movie, it is believed to be a dramatic artifact because it involves an exposition, rising action, and climax. It is a narrative from an ant in a personal turmoil with himself, not knowing the answer to his own thought of “There’s got to be more to life”. There is a powerful and dramatic message behind Z’s narrative/ monologue, and I believe my audience will interpret this drama presentation to be how Z portrayed it, an expressive depiction of the psychological warfare with himself.

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF AIR TRANSPORT

Towards a Sustainable Future:

The Environmental Impact of Air Transport

Problem Statement

The air transport industry is witnessing drastic growth over the past decades in regions throughout the world. According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the number of passengers flown in 2005 was 2.1 billion, and by 2017 that number has doubled to 4.1 billion. Following current trends in air transport, the number of passengers is predicted to double to 8.2 billion by 2037. Despite the social and economic benefits associated with this growth, it is also accompanied by various environmentally damaging repercussions. The aviation industry is still a major contributor to Earth’s carbon emission. The increased in greenhouse gases and climate change has led respective authorities and organizations to create a sustainable solution to solve this ecological problem. It is therefore, imperative to understand the aviation effects on the environment as well as come up with sustainable methods so as to reduce the overall environmental impacts of this industry.

This paper will be identifying the aviation industry’s role in environmental degradation and its overall impact on aviation safety. The various areas of pollution such as carbon emissions, climate change, noise pollution and air pollution will also be covered. A review of current laws, such as Clean Air Act, and regulations regarding environmental standards set forth by industry regulators to mitigate the impact of aviation on the environment. Exploring sustainable methods and finding solutions to reduce the environmental impact caused by the aviation industry such as biomimetic engineering and use of alternative fuels. Lastly the paper will touch on operational improvements in aviation such as the introduction of the Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen). These will be researched using literature reviews and peer reviewed articles assessed through available online databases such as the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Analyze Trade-Offs for Solutions

Analyze Trade-Offs for Solutions

615 Ass 4

The state legislature recognizes the need to focus efforts and resources on young offenders so that they do not continue to commit delinquent acts and perhaps transition to adult criminals, which would cost taxpayers even more. Acting as a state policy analyst and building on the annotated bibliography and literature review you have completed, propose 2 policy alternatives to combat juvenile delinquency.

Your readings in the course have exposed you to many of the key topics in criminal justice while showing you the importance of research and theories to the development of sound policies. You have seen how the writing in the text and other sources is not mere opinion or unsupported assertions. Rather, the work is built upon existing knowledge and contemporary studies.

As you consider how to advise the legislature on how to address juvenile delinquency in your state, you must rely on factual information and utilize a theoretical foundation. Delinquency, as well as other deviance, results from a variety of factors explained through various theoretical perspectives. One or more theories may draw your attention as instructive about the issues surrounding juvenile delinquency. Have these theories been supported by research?

Assignment Guidelines

You are a policy analyst in the legislative affairs office of your state legislature. The criminal justice committee of the legislature has requested recommendations about how to address juvenile delinquency in the state. You must conduct research and assemble 2 possible policy initiatives in your proposal. Use the 7 step process outlined in the MUSE link, CHDS Policy Options Analysis. Include the 7 steps in your proposal.
