Let’s consider the situation where we want to find out when the population will double. Let’s use this same example, but this time we want to find out when the doubling in population will occur assuming the same annual growth rate. We’ll set up the problem like the following: Double P = P(1 + r)n  P will be 301 million, Double P will be 602 million, r = 0.009, and we will be looking for n. Double P = P(1 + r)n  602,000,000 = 301,000,000(1 + 0.009)n

To study the growth of a population mathematically, we use the concept of exponential models. Generally speaking, if we want to predict the increase in the population at a certain period in time, we start by considering the current population and apply an assumed annual growth rate. For example, if the U.S. population in 2008 was 301 million and the annual growth rate was 0.9%, what would be the population in the year 2050? To solve this problem, we would use the following formula:

P(1 + r)n

In this formula, P represents the initial population we are considering, r represents the annual growth rate expressed as a decimal and n is the number of years of growth. In this example, P = 301,000,000, r = 0.9% = 0.009 (remember that you must divide by 100 to convert from a percentage to a decimal), and n = 42 (the year 2050 minus the year 2008). Plugging these into the formula, we find:

P(1 + r)n = 301,000,000(1 + 0.009)42
= 301,000,000(1.009)42
= 301,000,000(1.457)
= 438,557,000

Therefore, the U.S. population is predicted to be 438,557,000 in the year 2050.

Let’s consider the situation where we want to find out when the population will double. Let’s use this same example, but this time we want to find out when the doubling in population will occur assuming the same annual growth rate. We’ll set up the problem like the following:

Double P = P(1 + r)n
P will be 301 million, Double P will be 602 million, r = 0.009, and we will be looking for n.
Double P = P(1 + r)n
602,000,000 = 301,000,000(1 + 0.009)n

Now, we will divide both sides by 301,000,000. This will give us the following:

2 = (1.009)n

To solve for n, we need to invoke a special exponent property of logarithms. If we take the log of both sides of this equation, we can move exponent as shown below:

log 2 = log (1.009)n
log 2 = n log (1.009)

Now, divide both sides of the equation by log (1.009) to get:

n = log 2 / log (1.009)

Using the logarithm function of a calculator, this becomes:

n = log 2/log (1.009) = 77.4

Therefore, the U.S. population should double from 301 million to 602 million in 77.4 years assuming annual growth rate of 0.9 %.

Now it is your turn:

  • Search the Internet and determine the most recent population of your home state. A good place to start is the U.S. Census Bureau (www.census.gov) which maintains all demographic information for the country. If possible, locate the annual growth rate for your state. If you can not locate this value, feel free to use the same value (0.9%) that we used in our example above.
    • Determine the population of your state 10 years from now.
    • Determine how long and in what year the population in your state may double assuming a steady annual growth rate.
  • Look up the population of the city in which you live. If possible, find the annual percentage growth rate of your home city (use 0.9% if you can not locate this value).
    • Determine the population of your city in 10 years.
    • Determine how long until the population of your city doubles assuming a steady growth rate.
  • Discuss factors that could possibly influence the growth rate of your city and state.
    • Do you live in a city or state that is experiencing growth?
    • Is it possible that you live in a city or state where the population is on the decline or hasn’t changed?
    • How would you solve this problem if the case involved a steady decline in the population (say -0.9% annually)? Show an example.
  • Think of other real world applications (besides monitoring and modeling populations) where exponential equations can be utilized.

Your assignment is to read McCloskey’s short article found in the Reading & Study folder in Module/Week 7 and respond to each of the questions below. Your instructor is looking for a detailed response to each question.

this paper is to be in APA format it wont allow me to upload so im coping and pasting the instructions here

Response Paper Instructions

Having completed the unit of philosophy of religion, you are now ready to respond to an article written by an actual atheist. This article titled “On Being an Atheist,” was written by H. J. McCloskey in 1968 for the journal Question. McCloskey is an Australian philosopher who wrote a number of atheistic works in the 1960s and 70s including the book God and Evil (Nijhoff, 1974). In this article, McCloskey is both critical of the classical arguments for God’s existence and offers the problem of evil as a reason why one should not believe in God. Please note the following parameters for this paper:

1.  Your assignment is to read McCloskey’s short article found in the Reading & Study folder in Module/Week 7 and respond to each of the questions below. Your instructor is looking for a detailed response to each question.

2.  The response paper is to be a minimum of 1,500 words (not including quotes) and must be written as a single essay and not just a list of answers to questions.

3.  The basis for your answers must primarily come from the resources provided in the lessons covering the philosophy of religion unit of the course (Evans and Manis, Craig, and the presentation) and these sources must be mentioned in your paper. You are not merely to quote these sources as an answer to the question—answer them in your own words.

4.  You may use other outside sources as well, as long as you properly document them. However, outside sources are not necessary. Each of the questions can be answered from the sources provided in the lessons.

5.  While the use of the Bible is not restricted, its use is not necessary and is discouraged unless you intend to explain the context of the passage and how that context applies to the issue at hand in accordance with the guidelines provided earlier in the course. You are not to merely quote scripture passages as answers to the questions. Remember this is a philosophical essay not a biblical or theological essay.

6.  While you may quote from sources, all quotations must be properly cited and quotes from sources will not count towards the 1,500 word count of the paper.

7.  You may be critical of McCloskey, but must remain respectful. Any disparaging comment(s) about McCloskey will result in a significant reduction in grade.

8.  Please note that this paper will be submitted through SafeAssign, which is a plagiarism detection program. The program is a database of previously submitted papers including copies of papers that have been located on the Internet. Once submitted, your paper will become part of the database as well. The program detects not only exact wording but similar wording. This means that if you plagiarize, it is very likely that it will be discovered. Plagiarism will result in a 0 for the paper and the likelihood of you being dropped from the course.

Specifically, you must address the following questions in your paper:

1.  McCloskey refers to the arguments as “proofs” and often implies that they can’t definitively establish the case for God, so therefore they should be abandoned. What would you say about this in light of Foreman’s comments in his “Approaching the Question of God’s Existence” presentation?

2.  On the Cosmological Argument:

a.  McCloskey claims that the “mere existence of the world constitutes no reason for believing in such a being [i.e., a necessarily existing being].” Using Evans and Manis’ discussion of the non-temporal form of the argument (on pp. 69–77), explain why the cause of the universe must be necessary (and therefore uncaused).

b.  McCloskey also claims that the cosmological argument “does not entitle us to postulate an all-powerful, all-perfect, uncaused cause.” In light of Evans and Manis’ final paragraph on the cosmological argument (p. 77), how might you respond to McCloskey?

3.  On the Teleological Argument:

a.  McCloskey claims that “to get the proof going, genuine indisputable examples of design and purpose are needed.” Discuss this standard of “indisputability” which he calls a “very conclusive objection.” Is it reasonable?

b.  From your reading in Evans and Manis, can you offer an example of design that, while not necessarily “indisputable,” you believe provides strong evidence of a designer of the universe?

c.  McCloskey implies that evolution has displaced the need for a designer. Assuming evolution is true, for argument’s sake, how would you respond to McCloskey (see Evans and Manis pp. 82–83)?

d.  McCloskey claims that the presence of imperfection and evil in the world argues against “the perfection of the divine design or divine purpose in the world.” Remembering Evans’ comments about the limitations of the conclusion of the cosmological argument, how might you respond to McCloskey’s charge about the teleological argument?

4.  On the Problem of Evil:

a.  McCloskey’s main objection to theism is the presence of evil in the world and he raises it several times: “No being who was perfect could have created a world in which there was avoidable suffering or in which his creatures would (and in fact could have been created so as not to) engage in morally evil acts, acts which very often result in injury to innocent persons.” The language of this claim seems to imply that it is an example of the logical form of the problem. Given this implication and using Evans and Manis’ discussion of the logical problem (pp. 159–168, noting especially his concluding paragraphs to this section), how might you respond to McCloskey?

b.  McCloskey specifically discusses the free will argument, asking “might not God have very easily so have arranged the world and biased man to virtue that men always freely chose what is right?” From what you have already learned about free will in the course, and what Evans and Manis says about the free will theodicy, especially the section on Mackie and Plantinga’s response (pp. 163–166) and what he says about the evidential problem (pp. 168–172), how would you respond to McCloskey’s question?

5.  On Atheism as Comforting:

a.  In the final pages of McCloskey’s article, he claims that atheism is more comforting than theism. Using the argument presented by William Lane Craig in the article “The Absurdity of Life without God,” (located in Reading & Study for Module/Week 6), respond to McCloskey’s claim.

The Rough Draft of the Final Lab Report must contain the following seven sections in this order:

  1. Title Page – This page must include the title of your report, your name, course name, instructor, and date submitted.
  2. Introduction – This section should discuss why the experiment was conducted. At a minimum, it should contain three paragraphs. One paragraph must cover background information of similar studies that have already been done in the area. This is accomplished by citing existing literature from similar experiments and explaining their results. A second paragraph should discuss an objective or a reason why the experiment is being done. Why do we want to know the answer to the question we are asking? A third paragraph should provide a hypothesis for the experiment conducted, along with your rationale behind that hypothesis.
  3. Materials and Methods – This section should provide a detailed description of the materials used in your experiment and how they were used. A step-by-step rundown of your experiment is necessary; however, it should be done in paragraph form, not in a list format. The description should be exact enough to allow for someone reading the report to replicate the experiment, but it should be in your own words and not simply copied and pasted from the lab manual.
  4. Results – This section should include the data and observations from the experiment. All tables and graphs should be present in this section. Additionally, there should be at least one paragraph explaining the data in paragraph form. There should be no personal opinions or discussion beyond the results of your experiments located within this section.
  5. Discussion – This section should interpret or explain the meaning of your data and provide conclusions. At least three paragraphs should be outlined here. First, a paragraph should be present that addresses whether your hypothesis was confirmed or denied and how you know this. Second, you are to discuss the meaning of your findings in this area utilizing scholarly sources to put the paper into context. For example, how do your results compare with the findings of similar studies? Also, you should discuss if there are any outside factors (i.e., temperature, contaminants, time of day) that affected your results. If so, how could you control for these in the future?  Finally, you should discuss any future questions arising from your results and how you might test them with new experiments.
  6. Conclusions – This section should provide a brief summary of your work.  What are the key take-away points from your study?
  7. References – Provide a list of at least two scholarly sources, two credible sources, and your lab manual that will be used in the Final Lab Report. Format your references according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.

Note: An abstract must be included in the Final Lab Report. However, the abstract should not be included in the rough draft as it is to be written last after the entire paper is fully written. Do not forget this in your Final Lab Report.

written transcript of video

Hello, SCI207 students. This week, you’ll be working on your week three rough draft for your final paper. To help you complete the rough draft, you’ll use the template located in the week three assignment section. Using this template will not only assure that you are following the right format for your rough draft, but it will also clarify how to put together your rough draft, significantly reducing confusion and the amount of time it takes to complete the rough draft.
Let’s get into some more details about each section of the template. First, read the directions in purple at the top of the document, particularly the part about reviewing the final lab report instructions. Don’t skip over this section. Each of these points will clarify what to include in your rough draft submission. Finally, make sure you delete these directions before turning in your paper.
The first section of your rough draft will be the introduction. As you can see, this is already laid out for you in three sections– background, objective, and hypothesis– each with specific directions about what to write in each body paragraph. Make sure you read through each section line by line, paying special attention to where your sources go and where your hypothesis should be at this point.
The next section, materials and methods, will detail what you use in your exponent, as well as how you carried out the experiment. The directions in this part of the template will help you avoid two common pitfalls– too much information, or not enough information. Read through these recommendations to find the right balance for your draft.
The next section results will include two subsections– tables and body paragraph. The directions in the table section will assure that you are formatting the table in the correct format, and using the right units of measurement. You will follow this up with a paragraph that describes the results. Pay special attention to this sentence. No personal opinion should be included. This can be tricky to do, but think to yourself, just facts, no opinion, and you’ll be on the right path.
Next will be the discussion. This section of the template breaks down the discussion into three paragraphs to make it easier for you to write a concise yet meaningful discussion. Take a deep breath and work through each part. You will notice that this section includes questions that encourage critical thinking and reflection. Take time to consider these questions and how they relate to your findings. What do your results mean? How does your study relate to other research that has been done on this topic? In this section, you will also write about errors in your scientific experiment. Even the most precise scientific experiments have an error rate, so don’t be afraid to discuss this. It’s normal.
In the third paragraph, you will be asked to propose future exponents you might conduct based upon the results of this one. Scientists often find that each new exponent raises more questions than it answers. What new questions can you think of based on your own results?
Finally, you’ll work on your conclusion and references. The conclusion is simple. What main message would you like people to take away from this report? You may want to play around with your conclusion over the next few weeks until you can concisely summarize the main takeaways.
Don’t forget to include your references in APA format. If you need help of formatting, you can go to the Ashford University Writing Center to get resources or to reach out to a writing consultant. You can access the Writing Center directly from the Science 207 classroom. Just scroll down the menu along the left side of the page and click the tab labeled Writing Center.

Based on your discussions with Michelle, you have developed a clear picture of the environmental issues that will affect the initial release of the new product. As you compile your notes, the phone rings.

“Hello?”
“Hi. This is Michelle. I want to touch base with you about your presentation to the board next week. Do you have any questions about the upcoming meeting?”
“Thanks for calling,” you say. “You have good timing. I was just reviewing my notes and working on my PowerPoint presentation. I think I’ve covered the areas we discussed at our last meeting. Do you have something else that you want me to include?”
“Oh, good,” says Michelle. “Yes, I’d like you to share 3 or 4 goals for the marketing project, too. Make sure these goals are specific as possible. You might want to lead with the goals, but I’ll leave that up to you. Naturally you’ll need to do some research to determine the types of goals that are relevant for a new product project like this. Be as specific as you can when outlining realistic expectations.
“Okay,” you say as you jot down more notes. “Anything else?”
“Just be sure to include your thoughts about whether we should develop a product that can be marketed world-wide. You know that is one of their main concerns. You’ll have about 30 minutes for your presentation. ”
“Will do. Thanks for the information. I think about 10–15 slides should be about right for a 30-minute presentation.”

The students should list and explain 3–4 goals that a company in this situation should set for itself. The explanations should be 2–3 sentences each, and they should include citations from the text and other sources.
