Problem Scenario A:

Your meeting with the chief executive officers (CEOs) of UWEAR and PALEDENIM went well. In a discussion following the meeting, Tom Tramlin, the CEO of UWEAR, mentioned that he would like you to spend some time in the field with his top sales representative to get a feel for what the salespeople face every day selling in the current business environment. Today, you are scheduled to spend the day with Joe Smith.

As you walk across the lobby of UWEAR, you see Tom talking to a tall, distinguished-looking man. “This is Joe Smith,” Tom introduces when you step up to them. “You’ll be spending some time with him today in the field.”

“Nice to meet you, Joe,” you respond, shaking Joe’s hand.

Tom says goodbye and makes his way to elevator while you and Joe head toward the parking garage. “We’re going to meet with a couple of clients today,” Joe explains. “First, we’ll have lunch with Bill Bateman, the CEO of the Peninsula Hotel chain. He’s a great guy and I’m sure you’ll enjoy meeting him.”

“Where are we meeting him for lunch?” I ask, getting into Joe’s car.

“Bill’s hotel, the Peninsula, has a great restaurant that I frequently use to meet clients,” Joe answers. “The food is outstanding. We’re going to meet him there to discuss the renewal of his uniform contract.”

As you continue the drive to the hotel, Joe elaborates on his business history with Bill. “I was able to win the contract for the Peninsula chain last year,” he explains. “We were just able to underbid our competitor, Threads4U. In fact, Bill said that I underbid them by about $5 per uniform. Great victory on my part.”

“It sounds like you’ve established a great working relationship with Bill,” you say.

“Oh, yeah,” Joe agrees. “He’s a great guy. The first time we met, I was on my way to buy a nice bottle of cabernet as a birthday gift for my wife. She loves the expensive wines. I happened to mention this to Bill, he said he orders it all the time and offered to give me some for free. I told him it wasn’t necessary, but he insisted. When I got my car back from the valet, I found not just a bottle, but an entire case of high-end cabernet in my trunk.” Joe shakes his head, smiling. “But that’s just the kind of guy Bill is.”

“It sounds like it worked out for you and your wife,” you comment. “Did she enjoy her birthday gift?”

“Yes,” Joe says. “We both enjoyed it for quite some time. Well, here we are,” he adds, pulling up the Peninsula Hotel.

As you park and exit the car, Joe explains, “Since Bill and I have been doing business, he’s referred three other hotel owners to me to supply their uniforms. Except for when I’m meeting with one of his competitors, I usually conduct business meetings with clients here at the restaurant in Bill’s hotel.”

“It’s a beautiful hotel,” you comment as Joe leads you through the lobby, admiring the elegant décor. “No wonder you enjoy coming here. I wouldn’t mind bringing my family here for a weekend sometime.”

“Actually,” Joe says, “My wife and I have become really good friends with Bill and his wife. He often invites us out onto his yacht with his family, we go to social events with them, and we’ve stayed at the hotel several times. We really enjoy it. You should bring your family sometime, too. Kids love the pool with the waterfall.

n the article “Coaching for Positive Youth Development: The Right Environment,” Senior (2015) suggests eight ways that a coach can be intentional in providing a setting for positive youth development to take place. Which of these do you think is the most important (or do you think there is something more important that the author missed)? Why? Think back to a coach you had who made a difference in your life. What made him or her such a great coach? Did he or she do any of these eight things?

Please read the two additional articles listed under Week 3 (either on the “Week 3” page or on the “Additional Articles” page on Canvas) before answering this question. Use these two articles as well as the textbook and/or personal experience to answer the questions below. Also, please pay special attention to using complete sentences and not using fragments or run-ons in your discussion post this week.

1. Mellinger (2015) discusses coaching styles and the ways they can be utilized to foster positive youth development. He states that the “most effective styles of coaching, according to Self-Determination Theory are those that establish a greater sense of autonomy, relatedness, and competence within the athletes’ minds” (para. 6). Why do you think that is? What are some ways to create an environment that allows youth autonomy, competence, and relatedness?

Tell where you stand in the Friedman v. CSR debate. (The Friedman CSR view is the same as the post-depression model – He opposed the contemporary model. (This is the history of the problem) Do you agree with Friedman or not?

Assignment 5
Paper , Order, or Assignment Requirements

ASSIGNMENT FIVE OVERVIEW & RUBRIC

Read the Professors’ notes on the four parts of Assignment 5 carefully. This assignment measures your grasp of the material belonging to the Professor’s notes in Module Five and related topics. Regard its numbered units as chapters within your textbook and the “professor’s notes” as the “classroom” part of this course. The latter are particularly designed to enhance your grasp of what is expected in each part of this assignment.

DO NOT FORGET TO USE PROPER APA IN-TEXT CITATION

(Remember: no assignments will be accepted after 11:59 am – This means NOON – 8/5/2016)

Part 1. How business ethics is interpreted by the economics department

In this Part 1 of Assignment 5, six examples of economic systems are discussed. Each claims its validity on the argument that it is more a guarantor of security and fairness than the others. They are: Libertarianism, Free Enterprise, Free Markets, Capitalism, Socialism, and Communism. Then the debate on corporate social responsibility (CSR) is discussed. For your 700+ words:

Part 1 – A. Tell where you stand in the Friedman v. CSR debate. (The Friedman CSR view is the same as the post-depression model – He opposed the contemporary model. (This is the history of the problem) Do you agree with Friedman or not? Briefly state each and give your view.)

Part 1 – B. Tell which economic system you believe your CSR view best aligns with and explain why. (Here you must link your choice to one of the six economic systems given in the PPts. Properly done, this means that you would research an article that ties one of the economic systems to the Friedman debate. I did not ask for this because it takes a lot of time. But, you need to focus on the one and only one system that you believe aligns. Getting a source for more information on the economic system you believe applies would help.

Do not summarize my PPts regarding the other economic systems, and, actually you should not even base the summary of your choice on the PPts. I’m just telling you what to look for. You should base the summary on a researched description of the system.

Part 1 – C. Find an article or paper on CSR that you believe agrees with you, briefly outline its conclusion, and explain why you believe it supports your own view. (In 1-B you made a case for your view using an economic argument. To clinch where you stand you must next find an intellectual source, journal article preferred, that agrees with your interpretation of CSR. Once you find this, you conclude your paper with a brief outline of its view and make a concluding statement.

Part 2. The core issues in environmentalism as they relate to business activities

This Module provides an overview of the topic of sustainability. For your 700+ words in this Part 2, of Assignment 5:

Part 2 – A. Provide a brief overview of what you have learned from the discussions on sustainability in this module. (Don’t just cut and paste my PPts statements – use your own words)

Part 2 – B. Find an article or paper that gives the story of what a particular company did to measure up to the three principles within the concept of sustainability.

Part 2 – C. Tell what the company did and explain why you see that as meeting the goals of the three principles.

Part 3. The important role played by codes of conduct in the professional world

This Module provides an overview of the topic of Codes of Conduct. For your 700+ words in this Part 3, of Assignment 5:

Part 3 – A. Provide a brief overview ( write this as an essay) of what you have learned from the discussions on how codes of conduct relate to integrity, reputation, and professionalism in this module.

Part 3 – B. Find an article or paper that gives the story of how a professional had his or her reputation ruined by a lapse in meeting up to their professional expectations (do not use anyone discussed in this module).

Part 3 – C. Tell what the individual did, how they were harmed, and explain why what they did harmed them. ( don’t be afraid to research and cite additional sources regarding this)

Part 3 – D. Conclude with a brief discussion on whether you believe the harm done to them was fair or unfair and why.

Part 4. Important business ethics issues currently in the news

This Module simply concerns important business ethics issues currently in the news. For your 700+ words in this Part 4, of Assignment 5:

Part 4 – A Find a magazine or newspaper article published in the last six months that gives the story of an important business ethics issue. – Avoid the VW story since students have already heavily used it elsewhere.

Part 4 – B Provide an overview of the story in your own words. Don’t cut and paste.

Part 4 – C Tell how it relates to something in this course.

Part 4 – D Conclude by providing your own thoughts on the article.

Part 4 – E Treat yourself to your favorite dessert as a reward for wrapping up this course.

What do you think is it better to have a project manager who knew the department or outsider?

Project management
Paper , Order, or Assignment Requirements

In last 20 years the number of call centres increased rapidly. Many industries are depending on call centre and using them to increase efficacy of marketing, surveying and controlling. The call centres are very demanding on their employees. An operator is required to deliver perfect calls with every client. Many call centres are using automated systems for most common and repetitive procedures allowing them to significantly reduce the number of staff.

The Problem is that not everybody can use call centres. Only in US: 7.5 million people have serious trouble using their voices. Amongst the other solutions, large companies like Telstra and American Online are very interested for some sort of decoding device that is capable to translate impaired speech to understandable information regardless of the system used (human operator or automatic secretary).

Our case study company is in the engineering industry, and it was established 20 years ago The company main products are digital receiver and scanners. The company senior management did some investigation and they found (after a searching patents data bases) several technologies that can be developed to useful tool for decoding impaired voice. They contacted large call centres provider and the call centre provider responded positively showing an interest in sponsoring the project. Also call centre provider respond that they would like to have Project Charter as soon as possible. The Company estimated that they will need 3 software engineers (engagement of 100%) two electronic Hardware engineers (100% ) and one technician (with 50% ). The duration of the project has to be two years and full system including software and hardware has to be completed and ready for use. Some additional exercises will be: Leasing additional room in the industrial building; leasing special network analyser; conducting testing in licenced institutions; additional technical help by hiring consultants etc.

Task

You have to write Project Charter for the described case. Students are free to use Templates from prescribed literature, or any other template (with references) with condition that it covers all points needed for proper Project Chart. Students are also free to estimate cost of the elements of the project (all estimations have to have some logic).

Questions (short answers – a few sentences))

What do you think is it better to have a project manager who knew the department or outsider? Are there some potential problems with this approach?

Who else can be a sponsor of this project? Or by other words what has to be done if sponsor is not interested in project any more.
From engineering point of view what is the most dangerous risk in similar projects.
