Assignment 8

Analyze the policies, vulnerabilities, risks, and internal controls for a French bank (Societe Generale) that was a victim of a large scale fraud and recommend improvements to the company’s IT security policies. This assignment calls for a systematic analysis of an organization’s policies, vulnerabilities, risks, and internal controls. Many scientific, engineering, information, and accounting disciplines advocate general steps to problem solving utilizing a systems approach.

At this point in your academic career, you should be proficient at applying such a general approach to solving specific problems. Select and adapt such an approach with which you are most comfortable from your prior professional and academic experiences to apply to this assignment.

Suggested steps to the general systems approach to problem solving are as follows:
Define the problem
Identify evaluation criteria/measures of effectiveness
Identify alternatives/solutions
Evaluate/analyze alternatives utilizing analytical techniques consistent with step 2 criteria/measures
Select and display preferred alternative(s)/solution(s) consistent with the analysis in step 4
Implement and monitor step 5 solution(s)

Additionally, review specific readings regarding security controls, audits, inspections, risk assessment, and countermeasures. Utilizing an appropriate methodology for analysis (which may be adapted from the above 6 steps), identify a set of 8-10 recommendations toward solving the fraud issue of French bank Societe Generale.

There are three additional things to keep in mind:
Defining the problem or issue will require a data gathering stage.
Problem solving is not a once-through sequence of steps always performed in a specified order. It is full of iteration and feedback loops.
Finally, you will not be able to implement and monitor your recommendations in this assignment. Perhaps that means provisions for implementation and monitoring should be part of your evaluation criteria.

Your paper should include the following:
Identification and discussion the policies, vulnerabilities, risks, and internal controls for the French bank;
Evaluation of the weaknesses and impact on secure bank operations;
Recommendation and discussion of 8-10 security controls and countermeasures for mitigating problems in and improving the bank’s security posture;
Discussion of the methods that organizations can use to effectively achieve the adoption and implementation of the security policies, controls and countermeasures.

Prepare your paper to the following format:
A single Word Document 5 – 7 pages (font size – Times New Roman 12)
Single spaced with one-inch margins all around
All citations and the reference list in the paper should be formatted in accordance with APA 6th edition (or later) guidelines
References are NOT included in the page count

Can the process be “under control” in statistical terms but still fail to meet the needs of AnderSet’s customers? Explain, using a numerical example.

Question 1: (10 points)

Central Airlines would like to set up a control chart to monitor its on-time arrival performance. Each day over a 10-day period, Central Airlines chose 30 flights at random and tracked the number of late arrivals in each sample. The results are as follows:

Day Sample Size Number of late flights
1 30 2
2 30 3
3 30 4
4 30 0
5 30 1
6 30 6
7 30 4
8 30 2
9 30 3
10 30 5

Set up a p chart to track the proportion of late arrivals.
Suppose the company takes two additional samples and finds that the number of late arrivals is 7 and 8 respectively. Has the process gone out of control?
Now suppose that the sample size is actually 50, not 30. Recalculate the control limits for the p chart. What happened? Explain
Question 2: (15 points)

AnderSet Laboratories produces rough lenses that will ultimately be ground into precision lenses for use in laboratory equipment. The company has developed the following thickness measures, based on 10 samples of five lenses that were taken when the process was under control:

Mean Minimum Maximum
3.9 3.617 3.989
4.206 3.971 4.302
4.214 4.062 4.4
3.89 3.749 3.937
4.036 3.501 4.084
4.134 3.543 4.584
3.037 2.935 3.929
5.082 3.797 5.695
3.404 2.837 4.255
5.246 5.106 6.382

Use these data to set up the appropriate control charts.
Can the process be “under control” in statistical terms but still fail to meet the needs of AnderSet’s customers? Explain, using a numerical example.
Suppose AnderSet Laboratories takes some additional samples of the same size, yielding the following results. Plot these samples on the control charts and circle any observations that appear to be out of control.
Mean Minimum Maximum
4.134 4.011 4.612
3.913 3.891 4.474
4.584 4.499 5.145
4.009 3.934 4.891
4.612 4.085 4.983
5.627 5.183 6.08

Question 3: (10 points)

VendAMovie rents newly-released movies through vending machines at gas stations. The company currently has a policy of having four DVDs of each movie they carry in stock. For a given title, on average three customers arrive per day to rent it and customers keep the DVD for a day. Assume that customer inter-arrival times and the amount of time they keep the DVD are exponentially distributed. Also, assume that due to lack of competitors at VendAMovie’s price point, customers are willing to wait for the DVD they would like to rent (you may assume that a customer who does not find the DVD in stock gets into a virtual queue by reserving it online).

On average, how long does a customer wait for a DVD?
VendAMovie estimates that the company incurs a loss of goodwill cost of $1 per hour per waiting customer. If the hourly cost of keeping one DVD in the vending machine is $1.3, should the company increase the number of DVDs to five?
Hint: Please use the Queueing_systems spreadsheet posted on the website to answer this question.

Estimate the average customer wait before being served.

Operational management problem set

Question 1: (10 points)

Customers send emails to a help desk of an online retailer every 2 minutes. The online retailer has three employees answering emails. It takes on average 4 minutes to respond to an email. Assume that both the email inter-arrival time and the response time are exponentially distributed.

Estimate the average customer wait before being served.
How many emails would there be, on average, waiting to be answered?
Question 2: (10 points)

Consider the order fulfillment process at a pharmacy. The pharmacy receives, on average, 100 orders per day (assume that the pharmacy is open 10 hours per day). The first step is data entry and conducting the necessary checks such as inventory availability, insurance coverage, etc. On average, this step takes one hour. 10% of all scripts are rejected after this step due to various problems. 90% of remaining scripts move through the process without encountering any problems. Including waiting and processing times, the average time for these scripts is two hours. 10% of the remaining scripts encounter problems and they spend, on average three days in the system after the initial data entry and check step.

How many scripts are there at the pharmacy on average?
Based on your answer in part a, what is the estimated total flow time for the average script entering the process?
Question 3: (10 points)

Leah’s Toys makes rubber balls. The current process is capable of producing balls that weigh on average 3.3 ounces with a standard deviation of 0.1 ounces.

Suppose that the upper and lower tolerance limits are 3.5 and 2.5 ounces. Is the process able to meet the tolerance limits 99.7% of the time?
What is the largest standard deviation that process can have and still be able to achieve Six Sigma quality levels? How would your answer change (if at all) if the process mean were 3 ounces instead of 3.3?
