Two of the most important doctrines in Buddhism, which are at the root of most Buddhist teachings, are those of anatta, or no self, and dependent origination or pañicca-samuppàda. Because most of us are coming to these doctrines from a Western point of view, which is influenced by the Platonic notion that humans have an ontological being other than our bodies, and that there is some kind of permanence in the universe in terms of the transcendent, these can be a difficult concept to grasp. So for this question, I would like you to try and come up with some kind of analogy, story or explanation to explain the concept of anatta to someone younger than yourself.  Answer Created: The Cronicles of the Discovery and Conquest of Guinea begins the recorded history of slavery. In 1444 six caravels carrying 240 captives were put to auction by Prince Henry, who turned this auction into a spectacle to show the Portuguese had joined the European league of serious slave-traders of African people. Zurara explained to the Portuguese that their African slave-trading was a venture as missionary expeditions.

Explain Locke’s conceptions of substance (remember that Locke has two different conceptions).  How do Locke’s conceptions differ from Descartes’?  Why are their conceptions different?  Which of them has a better basis/ground/argument (within their own systems) for his conceptions.  WHY?

Write a paper (double-spaced, one-inch margin) on ONE of the two topics below. Be sure to answer all the questions asked.

5 pages

Deadline: Thursday, March 22

1)    Conception of Substance in Descartes and Locke:

Explain Locke’s conceptions of substance (remember that Locke has two different conceptions).  How do Locke’s conceptions differ from Descartes’?  Why are their conceptions different?  Which of them has a better basis/ground/argument (within their own systems) for his conceptions.  WHY?

2)    Skepticism with regard to external objects:

In Meditation 1, Descartes raises the skeptical doubt regarding our beliefs about the external world.  On the other hand, Locke does not explicitly raise any form of skepticism himself, although his representational theory does lead to skepticism about the external world.  Do Descartes’ skepticism and the form of skepticism entailed by Locke’s representational theory arise for the same reason(s)?  Explain each form of skepticism, and show how they are similar or different.  How would they respond to the problem of skepticism; that is, how would they be able to “solve” the problem of skepticism?  Are they successful?  Why or Why not?

Keep the following points in mind when writing this paper:

a)     Your paper is not just a report of your opinions, or of the ideas of the philosophers: you have to offer reasons (either yours or theirs) for them.  That is, you must explicitly give reasons for any claim you make, whether it is your own or philosopher’s.

b)     Don’t try to accomplish too much in a 5 page paper!  It is always better to make modest claims/points that are adequately supported, clearly explained, and fully developed than big assertions that are merely stated without any support.

c)     The paper should indicate some independent thinking (although you don’t have to try to break new ground).  Merely summarizing what the philosophers said isn’t enough.  Remember “explaining” and “summarizing/paraphrasing” are two different things.

d)     Think about the structure of the paper carefully.  Make the structure clear so that the reader will know where you are going.  Good philosophical thinking and good organization cannot be separated!

e)     These topics ask specific questions.  Everything, every sentence you write in the paper, should be relevant to them, and it must be clear how it is relevant and how they are connected so as to advance your arguments or explanations.

f)     If you criticize the philosophers’ arguments/ideas, try to anticipate their rebuttals.

g)     Do not assume that the reader knows anything that you are writing about.

h)    Say exactly what you mean so that the reader doesn’t have to guess……

i)      Make sure you understand the philosophers’ views/arguments very well.  You shouldn’t attribute wrong views to them!

j)      Use direct quotes only to support your interpretations.

World View Chart Assignments

Due every week

A world view is a fundamental or basic orientation of thinking – like a mindset – which guides a culture and / or a person’s life. Like a point of view, it can be built of concepts, ideas, values, emotions, and ethics. Weltanschauung is the German word for this idea. Your goal for this course is to understand the world views of these various religions. In order to prepare you for your final assignment, you will outline the world views of various religions in the chart below, adding to it each week.

For this assignment, students will complete the weekly area of the chart, filling in the aspects of each religion as it is presented in the readings and resources. This chart, when complete, will be the starting point for the written assignment, due in Week 10.

For each weekly submission:

1.       Review the weekly lectures and supplemental materials provided, then complete the chart by elaborating on each section related to the weekly content.

2.       Identify key details and examples from the weekly resources to serve as a basis for the content being recorded in your chart.

3.       Write clearly and coherently using correct grammar, punctuation, spelling, and mechanics.

FINAL PAPER: World View Chart Writing Assignment

This assignment uses the information you have gathered for your weekly World View Chart Assignments.

Choose ONE (1) category (origin of all things, nature of god, view of human nature, view of good and evil, etc.) from the chart to focus on for this assignment. Consider how the selected category relates to all of the religions covered and to your own social or work experiences.

Write a two to three (2-3) page paper in which you:

1.     Select ONE (1) category from the completed World View Chart. Provide a rationale for choosing this category. What is compelling about this category? Why is it important in the study of religion?

2.     Describe the selected content and explain the significance of the selected category across all of the religions studied. Show in what ways the category is significant for each religion.

3.     Give an example of how you have noticed this category in your life, town or country. What impact does this category have in the everyday lives of people who practice religion in your area? (You do not have to give examples of all the religions in your area, just one you have noticed besides any you practice). For example, in Cincinnati, Ohio we have Hindu, Greek Orthodox, Catholic festivals in the summer. So if my category were “Festivals and Celebrations” I could use those events as my example.

4.     Use at least three (3) quality resources as references for the assignment and document your sources using APA Style for in-text citations and references. Note: Wikipedia and similar Websites do not qualify as quality resources.

5.     Write clearly and coherently using correct grammar, punctuation, spelling, and mechanics.
