Applying Standardized Terminologies in Practice

Order Description
Requirements
For a selected patient scenario (I work at acute care facility), identify related NANDA, NIC, and NOC elements. Describe in detail the data, information, knowledge, and wisdom that guided you. The scenario is one that you choose and is in a context familiar to you so that you can provide the detail requested and apply your learning from this point forward.
PREPARING THE PAPER
1. Required texts may be used as references, but a minimum of three sources must be from outside of course readings.
2. All aspects of the paper must be in APA format as expressed in the 6th edition.
3. The paper (excluding the title page and reference page) is 3–5 pages in length.
4. Ideas and information from professional sources must be cited correctly.
5. Grammar, spelling, punctuation, and citations are consistent with formal academic writing.

Some general pointers:
• Paper should be no more than 3-5 pages in length
• Do not include more than 1-2 direct quotes
• Use at least 3 sources/references

“For a selected patient scenario, identify related NANDA, NIC, and NOC elements. Describe in detail the data, information, knowledge, and wisdom that guided you. The scenario is one that you choose and is in a context familiar to you so that you can provide the detail requested and apply your learning from this point forward.”
So, start with an introduction – what are you going to discuss.
Then describe your patient scenario. Give me enough details to help me see what is going on. For example, I used to work in the emergency department. I might choose a patient whom I triaged who came in with a severe sore throat, high fever, and unable to swallow. I would then give the details about his presentation.
Next, I would describe the DIKW framework AND how I used it to help figure out what this patient needed. I would describe the data and information in the situation, then how I applied knowledge to know how to triage this patient (I thought he might have epiglottis). Finally, because of wisdom, I was aware of the danger that doing a throat culture represented for this patient. Because of wisdom, when I saw the medical student do a throat culture, I made sure that the nurse assigned to this patient was aware of this. She then moved the crash cart to the patient’s room, and we were ready when the patient needed an emergency tracheostomy because his throat had swollen shut.
Then, discuss how you might use NANDA, NIC, and NOC to develop a care plan for this patient. So, for mine, it might be Risk for Impaired Gas Exchange related to throat occlusion manifested by stridor, and cyanosis, as the main nursing diagnosis. I would then go on to choose (and tell why for each) the appropriate interventions according to NIC and the appropriate outcomes according to NOC. Be sure to use the actual NIC and NOC terms as they are presented by NIC and NOC. Do not use ones that you come up with yourself. This paper is focused on standardized terminology so be sure to actually use the standardized terms.
Finally, write a conclusion. Be sure to include insights you gained from doing this paper.
Note: for much of this paper, it can be in first person. Just please try to avoid words such as “I believe” or “I thought”. You are writing this paper so I know it is what you believe or think.

1. Nursing managers are often faced with the challenge of motivating their staff. Consider the following example:
John is a nurse who has been working on your department for nine months. He is currently half way through a mandatory six month night

rotation. Last week you overheard him complaining in the hallway that he was unhappy with night shift, found it boring and had a hard

time staying awake. He made one medication error a week ago which he immediately brought to the nursing supervisor’s attention and the

patient was not harmed. You are concerned that his attitude made bring down the morale of other staff members and possibly affect his

ability to provide patient care.
Select one of the following motivational theories. Explain the theoretical background of the theory and how it relates to nursing

management. Explain how you would apply the theory to John.

1. Create ONE leadership goal that is in the SMART goal format. You practiced this in the Week 3 Discussion, and received valuable feedback from your instructor and peers. Please refer to this as you work on the assignment.

Leadership Development

PURPOSE
The purpose of this assignment is to develop a SMART-formatted goal related to your professional leadership applicable to your current

practice setting or future leadership aspirations. This goal is about YOUR leadership development, not those of the organization or the

department where you work. Many organizations have developed the SMART-goal framework as they strive for performance improvement.

Your goal may tie to one of the departmental or organizational SMART goals but the components of the goal are about YOUR leadership

development The Institute of Medicine’s quality initiative has identified five core healthcare profession competencies. This assignment

focuses on only two of those initiatives. Either Patient-Centered Care or Working in Interdisciplinary and/or Interprofessional Teams

will serve as a framework for identification of YOUR leadership SMART goal.
COURSE OUTCOMES
Completion of this assignment enables the student to meet the following course outcomes.
CO 1: Apply leadership concepts, skills, and decision making in the provision of high quality nursing care, healthcare team management,

and the oversight and accountability for care delivery in a variety of settings. (PO #2)
CO 4: Apply concepts of leadership and team coordination to promote the achievement of safe and quality outcomes of care for diverse

populations. (PO #4)
CO 5: Apply improvement methods, based on data from the outcomes of care processes, to design and test changes to continuously improve

the quality and safety of healthcare. (PO #8)
CO 8: Apply concepts of quality and safety using structure, process, and outcome measures to identify clinical questions as the

beginning process of changing current practice. (PO #8)DIRECTIONS
Review the Institute of Medicine’s (IOM) core healthcare competencies. Select ONE of the competencies that you will work on for

developing a Leadership SMART Goal. You are to select one of the following competencies for YOUR SMART goal.
Managing Patient-Centered Care or
Working in interdisciplinary and/or interprofessional teams;

1. Create ONE leadership goal that is in the SMART goal format. You practiced this in the Week 3 Discussion, and received valuable

feedback from your instructor and peers. Please refer to this as you work on the assignment.
S – Specific (Who besides YOU is involved in the goal, what is YOUR goal, where will it take place?)
M – Measurable (How are YOU going to achieve the goal?) Be specific with measureable outcomes.
A – Attainable (What resources and/or experts are available to assist YOU with attaining YOUR goal?)
R – Realistic (Is YOUR goal something that is realistically obtainable in YOUR professional practice?) Be specific.
T – Time bound (What specific dates or weeks will YOU accomplish each task related to your leadership goal?)

• Example NOT in SMART format: I will learn how to be a manager. This goal is lofty, not measurable, and unattainable in the time

allotted, probably not realistic, and not time bound.
• Example in SMART Format: I will learn the disciplinary process of an employee who has excessive absences, by locating the

organization’s attendance policy and meeting with the unit manager, reviewing peer-reviewed articles and credible websites to obtain

information on the disciplinary process by Week 4 (or specified date).
Note: This particular example relates to Core Competency: Managing Patient-Centered Care.

This example is a SMART goal that is Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Time-bound.

S-Specific
o Who- Your name, or “I” Indicate others who may be involved.
o What- Learn the disciplinary process of employees who have excessive absences
o Where- Your organization

M-Measurable
o How: Through locating the organization’s attendance policy and passing a quiz
-Attainable
o Resources and/or Expert: Meeting with the unit manager, reviewing peer-reviewed articles, and credible websites

R-Realistic
o Realistically obtainable: Access to the organization, policies, and unit manager. Various resources are available.
T-Time bound
o Specific dates: By Week 4 (or specific date)
2. Go to the Chamberlain library (http://library.chamberlain.edu) and search the databases (under Menu tab) to locate scholarly

articles related to your SMART goal. Also, search for credible websites to gain insight into how to accomplish your goal.
3. Construct a plan of action to reach My Leadership SMART goal. Be specific by creating a timeline of when you plan on doing

each action; explain how, when, and where you plan to communicate with an expert; and identify specific resources you will use to help

you achieve your goal.
a. Example Plan of Action for above mentioned example:
o Seek approval to review the organization’s policies and schedule a meeting/interview with the unit manager by _____ (fill in

date).
o Review the policies on disciplinary action by _____ (fill in date).
o Review the American Nurses Association website and peer-reviewed articles in the American Journal of Nursing and Journal of

Advanced Nursing by _____ (fill in date).
o Evaluate the findings from the above resources by _____ (fill in date). Pass the quiz.

4. Write a scholarly paper that follows APA formatting guidelines. Organize your content logically and express your thoughts

Topic: CRITICAL REVIEW OF A JOURNAL ARTICLE: Treatment failure in emergency department patients with cellulitis

Order Description
CRITICAL REVIEW OF A JOURNAL ARTICLE
In narrative format, write a critical review of the article you read (worth 40 points). Address each point below:

? Provide the biographical information on the article
o Title and author(s) and author(s) affiliations
o Journal name, volume and date
o Page numbers of the article
? Identify the article?s thesis (central controlling theme/reason for the research)
? Briefly summarize the article including the main ideas
? State three important facts or data that the author uses to support the results of the research
? Identify holes or problems with the author?s conclusions
? Identify any evidence or facts that you would like to have seen addressed
? Briefly discuss examples of propaganda, bias, or faulty reasoning found in the article, OR state if not present.
? Identify and discuss conclusions, implications, and consequences of the issue including your own conclusions and how you might utilize what was learned in future nursing practice (this may be written in first person)

Your paper should flow. Please note that narrative form is written as if you were telling a story from the third person point of view. Don?t just list the answers to each of these points. Ensure that your report is well organized. Use an outline for this purpose. Write a report that cohesively flows from point to point.

Soft guideline for length is 2 ? to 3 ? pages of text, not including the title and reference pages. Cover all the important points, but do not ramble or repeat yourself. Use APA guidelines in writing your paper. Include a copy of the article with your paper.

Remember?you should use facts and logical reasoning to develop your arguments. A critical review is based primarily on your thoughts about the article you read. However, at the same time, do not write in a subjective, biased manner?let your objective discussion of the main points make an argument for you (objectivity is very important here, state the facts not ?I think? or ?I feel?).

You will also participate in a peer review of your papers as scheduled prior to submission of the final report (5 points). The purpose of this is to help you proofread for issues such as organization, grammar, and formatting, and to give you constructive feedback on the content of your paper.

Finally, review your own writing using the rubric prior to turning it in and make adjustments as necessary
